Legends to score Mr Motocross trophies

13 years ago | Words: Andy Wigan

Remember those epic Mister Motocross trophies? Yep, the highly coveted muscle-man figurines, which also appeared in much of the series’ classic promo posters back in the day. These handmade trophies were first made for the 1979 Mister Motocross, but moves have been afoot recently to make some faithful replicas and hand them over to Trevor and Gary Flood – the first two Mister Motocross winners in 1974 and 1975, respectively. Anthony Gunter, who received a figurine for his 1979 title win, will also be handed two more, for his 1976 and 1977 title wins. According to Vince Tesoriero (Mister Motocross Promoter back in the series’ heyday), “The trophies will come out of the original mould, but no two are the same. Charlie Apro is making them, and back in the day, they were handcrafted using a combination of dentist and hand porting tools to create the detail”.

And do you reckon the boys are a little chuffed that they’ll be scoring the classic figurines 35-40 years later? “Mate, I heard that the Flood brothers actually teared up when they heard they’d be receiving these trophies,” explains Rosco Holden, who’s been the driving force behind the project. “The Floods are tough guys, but this shows how much that Mister Motocross series – and the trophies that symbolise it – meant to these blokes.”

So where did the idea come from? “At the Broadford Bike Bonanza a few years back, we were milling around and yarning, and one of the Flood brothers pointed to a picture of a muscle-man trophy and simply said, ‘I never got one of them’,” explains Holden. “I know how much these trophies meant to the guys who did get them, so I thought to myself that I could do something about it. I got together with Vince Tesoriero and we made it happen. And we’ll be handing them over officially on the March 8 Mr Motocross Legends & Stars Charity Dinner at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium,” Holden went on to explain.

Tickets for the dinner are going fast, with 550 of the 800 tickets already sold. Tickets are available here, if you want to bid for a seat on a Legend’s dinner table, simply type the rider’s name into eBay’s search function and bid for it. Aside from what promises to be a fantastic night, proceeds from the dinner will be going to a worthy cause. Keep up to date with further developments on Facebook.
