Six Tips to Dust Hustle – This Weekend!

8 years ago | Words: Hughan Seary | Photos: Brendan Schouten

The custom bike legends at Ellaspede are rolling their dusty circus of motorcycle tomfoolery into Brisbane this Saturday for Dust Hustle 7 at the legendary Mick Doohan Raceway, Banyo. If you haven’t stumbled across photos or videos of this event on the internet in the last five years then you should definitely look it up. They round up 140 riders to take on a pro level dirt track with ‘whatever ride they can wrangle’ for the day and it’s a damn good time. You’ll find everything from four-cylinder street bikes slushbox scooters tearing it up on track in the name of laid back fun. It’s actually amusing to see what these guys and girls are willing to take out and throw sideways on the dirt.
At $5 for spectator entry with kids (under-16) free it’s probably the best value motorsport entertainment going too, so if you’re thinking about heading along this Saturday here are our six tips for checking it out:

1. Access all areas

The chump change entry fee lets you access all areas of the event and we recommend taking full advantage. Wander through the pits for a closer look at all the inappropriate bikes or pick the best perch on one of four spectators hills to watch the on-track action. There’s also a trade show area for the latest and greatest from sponsors, most of whom will also be rolling on and off the track for some live product demos. This ain’t no allocated seating affair, just get in through the gate and go exploring around the event.

2. Have a small breakfast

The Ellaspede crew are known for tying in some tasty treats for their events and Dust Hustle 7 is no different. The Food Truck Roundup will be rolling in with no less than eight plus gourmet trucks to tempt the taste buds. We’ve seen their usual spread and they’re definitely in line for some of the best food you’ll get at a motorcycle track, ever. Plus the moto loving legends at Fonzie Abbott Espresso will be slinging coffee all day while Young Henrys and Sailor Jerry partner up at the Trackside bar for our favourite frothies and rum mixers.

3. Spot a local legend

Dust Hustle is definitely a grassroots good time, but it always attracts a couple of big names keen to come and kick it at a really casual event. Australia’s most successful off-road racer Geoff Ballard, multiple Enduro World Champion Jemma Wilson and Nitro Circus best trick winner Harry Bink will be rolling through for a ride and you can rub shoulders with them all day long. There’s no special treatment or roped-off signing sessions, so we advise saying G’day to each of these Aussie moto legends.

4. Be there for the pro demos

Make sure you’re around in the middle of the day when the inappropriate machines make way for the dirt track pro demos. If you’ve never seen dirt track live this is a must do and really highlights the appeal and excitement of cutting quick laps on a flat dirt track. Don’t worry that there isn’t a championship on the line either, any racer knows that when the gate drops it’s on for the win and these local guns won’t be holding back to impress a big crowd at their home track.

5. Dad, take the kids

Dust Hustle 7 is the day before father’s day, so there’s no excuse for the fathers not to make it out for a look and when it’s free to bring the kids then you can’t go wrong. They’ll be flat out spotting riders dressed up as everything from ‘Superman’ to ‘Princess Peach’ while you get to amuse yourself looking at some wacky rides and risky overtaking techniques. Plus there’s a bar for dad to wet the whistle and some epic ice cream for the kids (if they’re good of course).

6. Hit the spectator raffle

The event is renowned for a pretty impressive spectator raffle and you get an entry ticket just by entering the event. But at $2 a pop from the Ellaspede stand, we recommend improving the chances a little with a few extra entries that won’t hurt the days budget. Don’t even worry about hanging around all day for a chance to nab something either, just pop your email on the ticket and if you don’t make it to the Awards ceremony at 4 pm then just check the email when you get home and see what goodies you might have getting posted out.
