BETA’S PROTOTYPE RX250 4T MXER

Breaking into the hotly contested motocross bike market is no easy feat. Beta has been hard at it for five years now, and they’re showing no signs of letting up, with the release of several new MX models underlining just how serious the Italian manufacturer is about becoming a major player in the MX market segment.

Five years? Yep! Covid can distort time, eh? It was back in 2020 that the Italian manufacturer first signalled its intention to enter the MX market when it revealed a prototype 300cc two-stroke MXer called the RX300, which went into production the following year. Since then, Beta has released three more all-new MX models: the RX450 four-stroke, the RX250 two-stroke, and the RX350 two-stroke – a unique machine that captured everyone’s attention when it was first announced in 2024 and certainly impressed us when we first got to test it late last year.

Now, to fill the one glaring hole in their MX model line-up, Beta has confirmed rumours by unveiling a prototype 250cc four-stroke MX model – called the RX250 4T – which recently made its public debut at a round of the Italian MX Internationals. In the wake of that appearance, here’s what Beta has divulged about their all-new quarter-litre MX machine…

Beta has unveiled the first on-track images of its all-new RX250 4T prototype, marking a major milestone in the brand’s motocross development program. The highly anticipated machine made its competitive debut at the second round of the Italian MX Internationals in Mantua, where it was raced by one of Beta’s official test riders. After months of intensive development and countless testing sessions, the project has now reached an advanced stage – ready to prove itself under real race conditions.

A NEW ENGINE PLATFORM DEVELOPED IN ITALY

At the heart of the RX250 4T is an all-new 250cc four-stroke engine, entirely designed and developed from the ground up at Beta’s headquarters in Rignano sull’Arno, Italy. The engine represents a significant step forward in the brand’s technical evolution and signals Beta’s continued commitment to expanding its motocross offering.

The new engine features a timing chain positioned on the right-hand side, with the adoption of a modern DOHC architecture – now the benchmark for high-performance small-capacity four-stroke engines. This configuration differs from the current RX450 engine, which utilises a chain positioned on the opposite side, highlighting the clean-sheet approach taken with the 250 platform.

ALL-NEW CHASSIS DEVELOPMENT

Just as significant as the engine is the work undertaken on the chassis. The RX250 4T prototype features revised side-engine mounting points, with the engineering direction focussing on redefining the engine/frame relationship to achieve improved dynamic behaviour and enhanced rider feedback. The result is a completely new technical platform, built specifically around the demands of the 250cc motocross category.

COMPACT DESIGN & ADVANCED ENGINEERING

A standout feature of the new engine is its compact layout, particularly between the crankshaft and transmission assemblies. This tight packaging plays a critical role in optimising mass centralisation and improving overall rideability.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

  • Electronic starter system positioned on the left-hand side
  • Dedicated cooling circuit
  • Redesigned lubrication system
  • New oil pump and revised oil filter placement

While the prototype is already at an advanced stage, several components remain under evaluation. Race conditions provide the ultimate test bench, allowing engineers to gather further data and rider feedback before finalising specifications.

Beta will continue refining the RX250 4T in the coming months as development progresses toward final production configuration.

According to Beta Australia, timing on the release of a production version of the RX250 4T will be announced in coming months.
