Jett Lawrence: En Route To More Records!

4 years ago | Words: Andy Wigan | Photos: HRC, Feld Motorsports, Inc.

On a treacherous track in a packed Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Team Honda HRC’s Jett Lawrence got his 2023 AMA Supercross season off to the best possible start; his convincing 250SX-class victory providing the perfect platform for his bid for to add a West title to last year’s East crown.

The 19-year-old Aussie rode nearly flawlessly in the 250 West main event, taking the holeshot and leading every lap. He was also the only rider in the 250SX class rider to post a lap time that was less than a minute, and his 59.66” lap was early four-tenths of a second better than his nearest competitor. Lawrence’s main-event win was his eighth in AMA 250 Supercross, and his 15th podium.

Jett Lawrence: “It’s always nervous coming into the first one because you don’t know where everyone’s at. The big thing was how the track was going to form up for the main, and after practice, the joke was, ‘I just want to see Sunday!’ [laughs]. I had a bit of a rough one in the heat race, so I just focused on the main and making sure I did what I needed to do. I’m thankful I came out of here in one piece.”

So, what other interesting news emerged about the inimitable Jettson Lawrence over the weekend? Here’s a few random snippets:
• The Wednesday before A1 race day, Hunter and Jett Lawrence held a press conference at Costa Mesa, California’s South Coast Plaza. The public event featured Daniel Blair interviewing the brothers and Phil Nicoletti – Jettson Donuts’ first “sponsored” rider.
• It was also announced that Jettson is the Official Donut of AMA Supercross, and will be sold in the concourse areas at every round.

Jett’s dominant win at the season opener also has the sport’s statisticians in overdrive, predicting which records the young Aussie is likely to beat if he continues on his current dominant trajectory. For example:
• Jett’s eight wins is good for 26th all-time, but only five more wins would move him into fourth.
• A season sweep would see Jett break James Stewart’s record for most all-time 250SX-class wins (17). Nine wins would tie Jett with James.

When you consider the combo of the kid’s talent and his capacity to manage races from the front, it’s a brave man to bet against Jett doing some serious damage to the sport’s record books for many years to come.
