Five Minutes With Kade Mosig

Maintaining a low-profile right up until the MX Nationals season opener, Kade Mosig went about his business in an almost stealth-like manner. Now, competing aboard green machinery under the National Pump Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team awning for season 2016, Mosig speaks to AME Management’s Kane Taylor about his switch to the KX450F from CDR Yamaha, moving to Queensland and the shift in his mentality opposed to previous years.

Kane: Two MX Nationals rounds down, Kade. What are your thoughts on where you’re at and how the season has started?
Kade: Well, this year began really well for me. I think preparation-wise, it’s been ideal. I had a lot of time to get used to the Kawasaki and have adapted to the bike really well. It’s an awesome machine, and we have a really strong base setting. So now it’s just fine-tuning and becoming more and more comfortable. The first two rounds, racing wise, I’ve just made a few mistakes that have let me down. I certainly feel that I’m riding well, and I’m feeling confident, I just have to eliminate those mistakes and hopefully just start putting together two solid 30-minute motos from here on out. At the end of the day, I know I’ve done the work, and I’m willing to work harder to improve and make my way up the (championship) ladder.

Entering the season, going off all the videos and images that we saw, it looked as though you were a lot fitter than you have been in prior seasons. That’s not to say that you weren’t fit, but did you place any further emphasis on that this year?
Yeah, for sure. I’ve really put a lot more effort into my diet this year and tried to improve myself that way. I’ve made a few lifestyle changes as well, to try and find another level in my riding, and I believe that I am there and achieving that. So yeah, the effort that we are putting into this year is huge, and we just have to stay focused and remember why we’re out here. I am really enjoying racing this year, and I feel combining the fun with hard work will equal some good results.

And in the off-season, despite your major switch to Kawasaki, you remained fairly low-key and somewhat underground – almost to the point that no one really knew what you were up to.
I just didn’t really have the need to show everyone exactly what was happening behind-the-scenes. I kept my fans up to date with all of my riding stuff, and decided to keep the training side to myself along with some of the things that I get up to. So yeah, I guess you could call it low-key, but I don’t feel like I need to spend too much time on the social media side of things anyway.

You’ve certainly shown that you have speed by winning round one’s SuperPole at Horsham. Is it now just more-so about piecing your entire race day together?
Yeah, that’s all it is for me, I think. Just trying to piece that perfect day together. But I think there are a lot of positives so far this year – I’ve really wanted to improve in a lot of areas and we are showing that straight away. So yeah I think for me, it’s just about moving forward and applying what I have learnt over the years, and aim for the pointy end of the field.

A huge shift for you this year, in terms of where you’re living and based out of. What was the reasoning behind the move to the Gold Coast?
The team being based up here definitely had a little bit to do with that. That really suited me as I have always loved the Gold Coast area and have spent a lot of time up here throughout the years. It was a huge change. Myself along with my girlfriend, Stacey, decided that we wanted to start a life up here and it’s been awesome. One of the tough aspects, though, was sacrificing the facility that I had in Victoria at my own place. I’m making the adjustments up here, though, with the team and people I have around me.

What’s kind of surprised you this year, so far?
It’s all what I expected it to be really. Obviously the class is a bit different for this season compared to last year – there being a few more guys. So coming in I knew it was going to be tough, however, I have raced these guys all throughout my career. It’s just another year to do battle for me and I enjoy it, I think you can see how close the racing is, it makes it really exciting. It also makes you want to work harder and elevate your game. I think the pace here in Australia is going to a whole new level also. Everyone is riding really fast, which is great for Australian motocross.

Finally, how’re you finding the team two rounds in? Moss brothers as teammates and Troy Carroll as Team Manager?
The team has a really good vibe; I really love it. I love working with Troy, and the amount of support he has himself along with the team is awesome to see. I think for Matt and Jake, they’re really good teammates. We’ve grown up together racing over the years and spent a lot of time together, so it’s actually cool; we’re fifteen years down the track from when we first raced and now we’re on the same team. We’re getting along fine, and both Matt and Jake are really hard workers and together have had a lot of success. It’s good to see how they work – I’ve never teamed up with them before, so it’s pretty cool to see how they go about their business, and that’s the same for TC. The team is awesome.

Thanks for your time, Kade, and good luck at Horsham this weekend.
Cheers, mate!
