CHANGING A KATO’s EFI MAPPING

In the July issue of Transmoto, the Stage 2 article about our KTM 500EXC T-Ride suggested KTM owners should ask their local dealer to adjust the map via KTM’s User Setting Tool (UST). Because not all KTM dealers carry the $1000-plus UST, this was a little misleading. As it appears the “Mapping” section in that feature created confusion for some readers, KTM Australia’s Technical Services Manager, Rob Twyerould, penned the following to clarify the situation.

“The UST (User Setting Tool) is an advanced tuning tool for the KTM EFI system; it’s a tool that allows a wide range of adjustment for fuelling and ignition settings. The UST is available for the customer to purchase through KTM’s Power Parts catalogue. Some of our dealerships have also purchased the tool and are offering a tuning service. The UST will not unlock any additional horsepower on a standard bike, but it will change the power delivery and character.

Where the tool will be most useful is for the mechanic that has modified the motor (for example, raised the compression ratio, dialled in the camshafts, flowed the cylinder head, etc). In this instance, the tool will offer the ability to tune the standard mapping to the new motor configuration and quite possibly increase the horsepower.

“For the rider with a standard bike, the Map Selector Switch is a far simpler and effective way to offer three differing power delivery characteristics at the flick of a switch.”

“The software for the tool is available for free from KTM’s international site (www.ktm.com) and is available in 32- and 64-bit versions. Included in the download are the drivers, and some sample adjustments for the 250/350SX-F models for both a more aggressive power delivery or softer power delivery.
It would require some computer knowledge to successfully use this tool as it is an advanced program that offers a very wide range of adjustment. As such, once the tool has been connected to your bike, it will void your warranty.

“For the enthusiast who has a passion for EFI tuning, the UST will offer hours of rewarding tuning capabilities. For the rider who wants to dial in the power curve in his standard bike to suit his riding style, we would suggest the Map Selector Switch is a far simpler and effective way to offer three differing power delivery characteristics at the flick of a switch.”
