LIMITED-EDITION DESERTX GEAR

2 years ago | Words: Matt Holmes | Photos: Ducati Media House

Channelling the aesthetic of the Cagiva bikes that Ducati powered to win two of the ’90s Dakar events has been a masterstroke. And the retro-minimalistic design of the DesertX has well and truly aimed the spotlight onto the latest entrant into the mid-weight ADV class. With the motorcycle itself having such a strong identity, it was only fitting that a limited-edition range of technical riding wear, evoking the bike, should also come to fruition.

In referencing a time many of us romanticize about – blazing the deserts on old big-bore Rally Raid bikes – Ducati’s design team have brought to life a dedicated clothing line in-house at the Centro Stile. Headed by Desert Sled and Street Fighter V4 designer, Jeremy Faraud, his latest creation, the DesertX, now comes with its own capsule range.

Named “21/18” in reference to the wheel sizes, Ducati started with a technical jacket, pants and helmet. The style of the bike transferred to the clothing, alternating large and small curvatures on the bike to clean cuts and soft lines on the clothing. Yes, white dominates the collection as well as the bike, but it goes deeper than simply an air of Italian style and confidence. Namely, an important historical value: the rally riders of the ’90s wore light-coloured jackets because they reflected the sun (and back then, tech fabrics were a long way from reality!).

“With the new DesertX, we think we’ve managed to come up with a completely new design that’s out of time and out of fashion,” according to Jeremy Faraud.

JACKET & PANTS

The Dianese made jacket is a premium offering, with Pro-Armour Level 2 protection, pockets for a back protector and hydration pack plus detachable sleeves allowing greater freedom of movement in off-road riding. The front pockets are large and take inspiration from the travel packs used in the enduro world. The back pocket is asymmetrical for easier opening and a host of vents keeping it cool. Pants-wise, the same stretch and protective fabrics are used, and alongside Pro-Armour Level 2 protection there’s pockets and vents galore.

HELMET

Ducati collaborated with AGV to work with their very sorted AX9 Helmet. A carbon, aramid and fiberglass shell (in four sizes) surrounds a four-density EPS inner to provide all the protection, while an adjustable peak designed to limit the sail effect also channels air through its ventilation system using two rear extractors and three front air intakes. AGV’s tech continues with 100% max Vision Pinlock technology to allow for perfect visibility and a dry visor at all times. Slide the visor up and the helmet works beautifully with goggles, holding them securely even in the most extreme uses.

While the tech apparel is limited edition, a more comprehensive range of T-shirts, caps and a hoodie also celebrate the upcoming DesertX’s arrival on these shores.
