Is the World Motocross Championship coming back to Australia?
So is the World Motocross Championship coming back to Australia next year, or isn’t it? According to the Championship’s promoters, Youthstream, and their provisional 2011 race calendar, it is. And according to several websites around the world, it is. But according to Motorcycling Victoria, the sport’s governing body in Australia who you’d think would be across such an important race allegedly being staged in their back yard, it’s anything but a forgone conclusion.
The statement below, issued by a non-specified representative of Motorcycling Victoria earlier this week, points to the fact that no official commitments have been signed with Youthstream, meaning all the recent talk of a return to the Broadford GP in May next year (a decade from the last time the Wolrd MX Championship was staged in Australia) is little more than wishful thinking at this stage.
Stange though that a professional outfit such as Youthstream would get so far ahead of themselves, don’t you think? Sounds like there’s some posturing and lively negotiations afoot. We’ll keep you abreast of what will no doubt be some interesting developments in the coming weeks.
Motorcycling Victoria (MV) has issued a statment regarding the release of the Provisional 2011 FIM World Motocross Championship schedule on which Australia was listed as the opneing round.
The statement read, “As a result of the FIM releasing its 2011 Provisional Calendars, there has been a lot of conjecture suggesting that Victoria, via Broadford will host a round of the FIM Motocross World Championship next year.
“Motorcycling Victoria (MV) would like to state on the record, that there are no signed or official commitments to host a Championship round in 2011.
“We are currently in negotiations to see if the hosting of such an event could become a reality, but as of yet, have nothing concrete to report.
“Should this situation change, and when further information becomes available, we will certainly let everyone know, but for now there is nothing further to be added.
“MV will continue to work in the best interests of the sport in this State, and indeed, for the benefit of motorcycling in Australia,” the statment concluded.
