AUSSIE SX C’SHIP GETS A REVAMP

Can you believe that it’s been almost three years since a round of the Australian Supercross Championship was staged? Got a little global pandemic to ‘thank’ for that! But come this October, a five-round rebooted national series is finally set to crack into action. Here’s an insight from series promoter, AME Group, about what to expect and where you can catch the action…

The FOX Australian Supercross Championship (ASX) will make its long-awaited, post Covid-19 return, with the new-look series slated to kick off this October.

A major revelation for the championship in 2022 is a significant calendar shift, with five events spanning November 2022 to January 2023, touring four regions of Australia.

The Championship will be led by the General Manager of Events & Commercial at AME Group, Ben Williams. Ben’s experience spans over 25 years in the motocross and supercross industry, including heavy involvement in operations of the AUS-X Open event since its inception in 2015.

“We are excited to roll out a new direction for Australian Supercross after taking an opportunity to reset,” said Williams. “The Australian Supercross Championship is one of the most credible, respected and hard-fought on the planet. It’s important we re-establish the series post Covid and give our riders the platform to catapult more Australian stars into the global spotlight.

“Off the track, we believe the series has an important role to play in its connection with grassroots participation getting more riders on dirt bikes, as well as establishing a stronger engagement with our younger fan base,” Williams went on to say.

Key to the re-launch strategy is a shift towards a ‘summer’ series for the Championship, with Williams saying new audiences and event attendance is the key motivator for the move: “Moving into the summer months, we hope will give the Championship more clean air in the Australian sporting landscape, as well as attract new spectators more motivated to attend events on warmer nights.”

Excited for the return of supercross, Motorcycling Australia CEO, Peter Doyle, explains that he’s thrilled to see the delivery of this year’s championship, identifying supercross as a vital part of off-road competition in Australia.

“Supercross is an integral part of motorcycle competition within Australia,” explains Doyle. “At Motorcycling Australia, we’re looking forward to seeing what the AME Group has in store for this season, as the championship makes its triumphant return to Australian venues.”

Industry giant, FOX, will return for 2022 as the title sponsor of the series, with the brand’s Global Marketing Director, Mikey Rangel, excited for the rollout of this year’s ASX. “We’re thrilled for the Australian Supercross Championship to make its return and provide athletes and global race fans a best-in-class racing experience,” says Rangel.

Revelling in the return of live racing and events post Covid, the series will focus on driving transformation across the Australian Supercross narrative; to continue to grow the sport and feed a hungry domestic audience eagerly awaiting the gates to drop.
