Ryan Dungey: Life After Racing

7 years ago | Words: Ryan Dungey: Life After Racing | Photos: KTM Images, Sebas Romero

In May last year, when Transmoto’s Andy Wigan sashayed his way over to Italy to take part in the international media launch for KTM’s new-generation 2019-model MX-bike range, he sat down for a chat with multiple AMA MX and SX champ, Ryan Dungey. Problem is, Wigan lost the voice memo, the dip-shit! Of course, this only came to light recently, when he found the recording of that conversation with Dungey on an old USB, and suggested the rest of us in the office listen to it. Well, when we did, we knew we were sitting on some gold.

So, the convo may be a little old, but it’s still relevant. In fact, it’s fascinating! During that 15-minute chat at Italy’s Malagrotta MX track, Dungey offers a candid insight into that 2012 season when he first moved to KTM; into his take on alloy versus steel frames; the challenges he faced with race bike set-up; the head-butting he did with his team manager, Roger DeCoster; the role he played in the evolution of KTM’s production models; the satisfaction of winning KTM’s first AMA MX and SX titles in the premier class; what he thinks of KTM’s 2019 production models and their WP AER air fork; and what his future might hold with the Austrian-based company he’s enjoyed so much success with.
Enjoy…

PS: And thanks to the Red Bull DJ, who kindly pumped out a bunch of AC/DC tunes in the background during the entire conversation.
