2021 East Coast MX: Round 1 Recap

Luke Clout and Rhys Budd dominated Maitland at the re-scheduled Rnd1 of the East Coast MX Series last weekend. Both Yamaha riders won all four motos in their respective classes to take the championship lead.

In the MX Open CDR Yamaha Luke Clout was on point in the starts, checking out early every race winning by a considerable margin. Rhys Budd was impressive in the MX Open on his YZ250F against the bigger 450 machines, coming in second to Clout in the first 3 motos and a 3rd in the final moto with Dylan Wills finishing just in front of him, but a DNF in the second moto cost Wills the overall podium.

In the 250 class, Rhys Budd also got out front early every race and won convincingly however GASGAS rider Blake Fox did shadow Budd with the two riders pulling out more than 40 seconds on the rest of the field. Although Budd had little extra pace on Fox, it looked like Fox treated the event as a training exercise slotting in behind Budd every race to try and learn his pace in preparation for ProMX at Maitland in June.

Blake Bohannon won both the 7-8 50cc and 65cc classes overall winning 5 out of 6 races but was denied a race win in the second 50cc race by Cobra rider Beau Campbell.

The riders in the 9-12 85cc class were all over the place with three different riders winning each race. The most consistent was KTM rider Nate Ebbeck who claimed the overall victory with 6-1-3 finishes, and fellow KTM rider Jack Burton coming in second overall him with 2-3-5 finishes.

Promoter Michel Constantinou commented, “After a difficult start to the year due to adverse weather we finally had a perfect weekend, the track was the best I’ve ever seen it, it was rough and rutted but we had great feedback from everyone about the conditions.”

The next round of East Coast MX will be on June, 19-20 in Port Macquarie.

Congratulations to the winners of East Coast MX in Maitland.
