WSX 2026: CALGARY OPENER PREVIEW

The 2026 FIM World Supercross Championship opens this weekend at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium, kicking off a six-round global season that will finish with the series’ first-ever visit to New Zealand – its second Supercross event in the country this year alongside AUSX’s Auckland return.

Big rigs, bright lights, and a genuinely global calendar – the 2026 FIM World Supercross Championship gets underway this weekend, and by the time the chequers fall on the season, it’ll have visited five continents and, for the first time in the championship’s history, New Zealand.

That opener lands this Saturday, August 8, at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium – a first visit for the city, but a third straight year the series has raced on Canadian soil. Reigning SX1 champion Jason Anderson returns to defend his crown with Pipes Motorsports Group, while SX2 champion Max Anstie switches to Rick Ware Racing to chase back-to-back titles alongside three-time AMA Supercross champion Cooper Webb, who’s committed to the full WSX season for the first time. Quad Lock Honda’s Joey Savatgy is still working back from a wrist injury, with Dean Wilson stepping in for the Calgary round, while Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki has bolstered its SX1 ranks with Luke Clout and Mitchell Harrison.

From there, the series heads to Birmingham (October 10), Buenos Aires (October 24), the Gold Coast (November 21) and a still-to-be-confirmed South African round, before wrapping up the season in style on December 5 at Christchurch’s newly built One New Zealand Stadium – the championship’s first-ever race on Kiwi soil.

It means Supercross fans across the Tasman get two stadium events on home turf this year. AUSX also returns to Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium on October 31 for the first time since 2019, headlined by reigning AMA Supercross champion Ken Roczen and Kiwi favourite Cole Davies, fresh off his AMA 250SX East title. Add the WSX finale in Christchurch six weeks later, and it’s shaping up as a huge back half of the year for New Zealand Supercross fans.

For now, though, all eyes are on Calgary and the season-opening Canadian GP, with the first championship points of 2026 up for grabs in both SX1 and SX2 classes.
