2018 ECMX: Round 3 Recap

8 years ago | Words: ECMX | Photos: MX Photo

Lake Macquarie was host to the third round of the East Coast MX Series with just over 350 entries for the weekend. At the midway point of the season, the championship contenders in each class are starting to establish their positions with only two rounds left. 28 riders combined MX1 and MX2 riders in four, 20 minute motos, plus lap races set up a crowd pleaser with some of the best riders in the country.

Tyler Darby put in another consistent finish with 4th place in the MX2 to hold onto the championship lead, but glory on the day went to Lakes local Jy Roberts on his Husqvarna FC250. You would think the 450 riders would have it their own way, but Roberts got the holeshot and won the first three (MX1 & MX2) races outright and also the overall win in the MX2 class, and defending MX2 National Champion Egan Mastin won the last (MX1 & MX2) race outright to finish 2nd to Roberts on the day. Corey James made his return from China with the overall win with the better finish in the final moto of the MX1 class, tying on points with MX1 championship points leader Joel Wightman.

There was also some exciting racing in the 12-u14 and 14-u16 years 85cc classes which were combined races on the day but scored separately, with Rory Fairbrother claiming overall victory with 1-1-2 finishes, extending his lead to 21 points in the 12-u14 85cc class over his next closest rival Hunter Collins, and Ben Novak winning all three races in the 14-u16 85cc class to come within seven points of championship leader Joe O’Donnell.

Congratulations to the winners of Round 3 East Coast MX at Lakes MBC.
