Official Press Release
The biggest dirt bike enduro event in the Southern Hemisphere is set to be held at one of Australia’s most breathtakingly beautiful stretches of coast in 2011.
From April 20th to 23rd, about 350 racers and hundreds of crew and fans will descend on Koumala (located 58km’s south of Mackay, Queensland) for the 33rd annual Australian 4-Day Enduro (A4DE).
The iconic race is one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious enduro motorcycle events and contributes an estimated $5 million annually to the economy of the host area.
The event will be one not to miss for keen racers and trail riders alike.
Trail sections and special tests are set to be some of the most memorable in A4DE history, being planned for the scenic mountain ranges, lush valley’s and paddocks of the Sunshine State’s ‘Gateway to the Whitsunday’s’.
Conditions for the race should be ideal, with Mackay enjoying some of the highest rainfall averages in the state. Temperatures should be perfect for riding: April (Autumn) usually yielding 18 to 20 degrees.
Queensland has not had a go of running the annual event since 1996. In 2011, John and Ann Hand and the Gum Valley Motorcycle Club will be running the race.
Hand said a lot of the course would be held on private property, with the final motocross at his track at Gum Valley (which has hosted Australian MX Nationals rounds and last year won Track of The Year in the 2009 Dirt Action MX Awards).
“Not since the Coffs Harbour four-day in 2006 have people been able to combine a scenic beach holiday with an A4DE,” Hand said.
“Mackay will offer the best of both, with stunning beach and leisure activities for the family, as well as great riding for the competitor.
“We hope to take the sport to a new level by having a lot of the special tests where people can get in and see them, to increase the spectator appeal.
“For the riders, our four day will be a bit challenging, but won’t be too hard. It will be a good, tough ride.
“The trail will be fun, there won’t be a lot of fire road, will a bit more single track.
“Park Ferme will be at Koumala, which is about 50km’s from Mackay, so there will be plenty of amenities and accommodation. Mackay Tourism has offered to help people find and book accommodation.”
The A4DE is a true test of man (and woman) and machine: competitors will spend about 25 hours on their bikes and cover around 800km’s.
The event is ran in time rally format, with entrants completing three days of trail and special test phases and a short trail section and final motocross on day four.
The 2011 A4DE will be held at Mackay (QLD) from April 20th to 23rd.
