2014 Troy Bayliss Classic Preview

12 years ago | Words: Alex Horvath | Photos: Mark Petersen

When off-road riders hear about flat-track racing, they think of a bunch of old blokes, living out there glory days drifting old vintage flat-trackers around dilapidated circuits placed off to the side of the local motocross club. Don’t be fooled, though. The humble old flat-track is where the great majority of heavy-hitting motorcycle racers from all disciplines cut their teeth.

Recently, we are starting to see a revival of the discipline thanks to marquee events like the King of the Nepean and the Troy Bayliss Classic (TBC). In its second year, the TBC will return to its birthplace in Old Bar, the home of the Taree Motorcycle Club, on Saturday, January 18.

Ahead of the event, organiser Mark Petersen assembled a motley crew of motorcycle legends to take to the Old Bar flat-track and battle it out in early December for a media launch. While the day wasn’t meant to be competitive, when you assemble such legends from all corners of motorcycling on the one start line, you shouldn’t expect anything less. The riders banged bars into corner one and dished up some incredible racing. If this is the prelude, the day is sure to feature some exciting action.

Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased by clicking here. The event will feature a number of support categories including: Junior Flat Track, ATVs, Sidecars and Senior Flat Track.

The 2014 Troy Bayliss Classic will feature a star-studded line-up of riders, including:

  • Troy Bayliss (3 x WSBK Champion)
  • Shayne King (1996 World Motocross Champion)
  • Jason Crump (3 x Speedway World Champion)
  • Mick Kirkness (2013 TBC Winner)
  • Alex Cudlin (3 x Qatar Superbike Champion)
  • Cam Donald (Isle of Man TT Winner)
  • Paul Caslick (Dirt Track legend and 9 x Aussie Champ)
  • Josh Hook (Team Honda Racing Superbike Rider)
  • Barry Cockle (Motocross/Supercross legend)
  • Dave Armstrong (Endurance legend)
  • Anthony Gunter (3 x Mister Motorcross, 3 x Australian Champion)
