Walker Wins Us EnduroCross Title
A month ago, when we last checked in with Beta’s Jonny Walker, he’d managed to overcome two knee and shoulder surgeries and a poor start to the season and, after Round 4, he’d climbed to equal second place in the six-round 2022 AMA EnduroCross Series’ standings. And last weekend, the likeable 31-year-old Brit wrapped up the title.
At an adrenaline-filled final round in Reno, Nevada, Walker’s a 3-2-2 scorecard gave him second Overall. But it was enough to turn around his 1-point deficit to KTM’s Trystan Hart coming into the final round, and go on to clinch the EnduroCross title by 3 points.
“I’m absolutely stoked to win the championship at the final round,” a beaming Walker say after the nail-biting night’s racing, almost in disbelief that he’d only taken the lead in the series at the sixth and final round. “It’s been a tough battle, but we made it happen. I can’t thank my sponsors enough for standing by me after my surgeries. It means so much.”
Gracious in defeat, Trystan Hart admitted that, “This isn’t the way we envisioned tonight going. I got sixth in moto one and then two moto-wins to back that up, but it just wasn’t good enough to win the championship. Jonny had a lot of pressure, and he rode really good, so congrats to him. I finished just three points behind him in the title chase. We’ll use this year’s experience to come back stronger next year.”
