The Brand New S-X Open Championship
Over the past couple of weeks, there have been loads of press releases sent out and social media announcements made about the brand new Monster Energy S-X Open International Supercross FIM Oceania Championship. So, to simplify things, here’s the critical information you should be aware of.
The S-X Open Championship
The two-round Monster Energy S-X Open International Supercross FIM Oceania Championship is an extension to the popular Monster Energy AUS-X Open Sydney event, which will run for the fourth time in 2018. The Sydney event – scheduled to take place at Qudos Bank Arena on November 10 – will now serve as Round 1 of the S-X Open Championship, while Round 2 will be a brand new event; the Monster Energy S-X Open Auckland, which will run at Mt Smart Stadium in New Zealand on November 24.
The Championship Riders
The superstars confirmed to contest both rounds of the S-X Open Championship in Australia and New Zealand are (so far) Chad Reed, Justin Brayton and Ryan Villopoto. Reed contested the first two AUS-X Open Sydney events, but was unable to race last year due to an ankle injury sustained just weeks prior. Brayton raced the AUS-X Open Sydney in 2016 and 2017, while Villopoto came out of retirement to cut laps at the 2016 event only.
The Standalone Event Riders
Earlier this year, it was announced that Jason Anderson and Justin Barcia would be coming Down Under to race the AUS-X Open Sydney event, while it was recently announced that Ben Townley would be coming out of retirement to battle it out at the inaugural S-X Open Auckland event. At this stage, these three riders won’t be contesting both rounds of the Monster Energy S-X Open International Supercross FIM Oceania Championship, but that could change.
