Talkback with the director of the greatest MOTO movie of 2010

The Director and Producer of MOTO2 The Movie, Taylor Congdon, talks with us about making one of the best moto movies this year, MOTO2, and his plans for 2011. Taylor even hints that there could be some Aussies in MOTO3, if it goes ahead…

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My production company is called “The Assignment”. Essentially its just me… Every project is so different from the next, so I hire my filmers, editors, graphic guys on a per project basis.

Were you overwhelmed with the success of the first movie?

I was amazed at the positive response. The first MOTO The Movie was a movie I always wanted to do. In the past I was stuck making movies for other companies and had to stick to their guidelines. I always thought it would be cool to compare and contrast all the different disciplines of MX riding and racing. I love riding off-road and have always wanted to show how visual and intense that side of the sport is.

Did you use any new gear this time?

The first MOTO movie was shot with the Panasonic P2 cameras but for MOTO2 we shot primarily with the new Canon HDSLR cameras. Its always a challenge using new equipment but I really like the new HDSLR cameras because we have so many choices of lenses. As for all the POV shots we used the GoPro HDs, which are so fun to use, you can put them anywhere!

What was your longest day of shooting and with who?

All the shoots went pretty smooth. I’d say the toughest shoot days are at the races. The outdoor nationals are held in the middle of summer, the events back east can be miserable with the heat and humidity (which our cameras hate!!).

Who was the best and who was the hardest riders to work with?

All the riders are really accommodating… I’d have to say the best and most motivated rider would be Kendall Norman, he was bummed when we said we had enough footage. He never wanted to stop shooting. I love working with guys like that!!

All of us think the graphics in this one have stepped up to a new level, tell us a bit about them.

That quite a complement… The graphics in MOTO2 were done over in Berlin Germany by Johannes Neumann. I got hooked up with Johannes from a friend over in Maui who does a lot of windsurf films. I don’t know what to say other than he took our ideas to the next level, especially the intro title when all the riders run over the camera and the MOTO2 title appears.

Do you have anything else on the drawing board for 2011 if so what is it?

We’re just starting to talk about this coming year. I’m leaning towards another MOTO film. The last two were so much fun and seem to be doing so well that it only makes since to keep the momentum going.

Are you planning on doing any filming in Australia soon?

Id love too!! We just need to get the right situation and riders figured out.

Thanks for your time, do you have anyone that you’d like to thank

I have to thank everyone that contributed to the making of MOTO2. Honestly there’s too many people to thank, it literally was a global effort of 10-15 guys all with the same goal of making the best MX film possible.
