WHY WE RATE IT…

Shark has a proud history of coming out with new and innovative helmet designs. The Frenchmen have continued that tradition with their new hybrid lid – the Discovery Explore-R. It is the most versatile helmet we’ve ever donned, quickly transforming between a road and off-road lid. With the visor on and sun peak removed, it looks and feels like a well-constructed road bike helmet with excellent peripheral vision. With visor off, sun peak on and clip-on goggles attached, it converts into a respectable off-road lid. The Explore-R is also packed with features that you didn’t even know you needed – a zip-away rain curtain to protect your neck, a drop-down sunglass visor, and spectacle frame tunnels on each side. If you exclusively ride off- or on-road, there are better tailored helmets for your needs. But for adventure riders, the ability to transform the helmet in just two minutes between road and off-road spec on the side of the trail is gold. The standout feature of the Explore-R is how snugly the clip-on goggles sit in the helmet frame, reducing wind and noise while still providing all the vision and anti-fog advantages of goggles.
