Reed & Webb share AUS-X Open wins
Australia’s greatest supercross rider, Chad Reed, and American import, Cooper Webb, shared SX1-class wins over the weekend at the inaugural AUS-X Open, held inside AllPhones Arena at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush, November 28-29.
In front of more than 15,000 screaming fans on Saturday night, Reed put on a racing clinic, much to the delight of his hometown fans who enjoyed their first taste of indoor supercross racing in over a decade.
“I’m super pumped to win here in front of the home crowd at the AUS-X Open in Sydney,” said Reed. “To see all these fans here at AllPhones Arena going absolutely nuts all night is massive for supercross in Australia and I can’t thank everyone enough for getting behind the AUS-X Open.”
On Sunday night, Reed and Webb laid it all on the line, with the pair going toe-to-toe in an epic last-lap thriller, which saw Cooper, the 20-year-old from North Carolina, taking home the win.
“I’m stoked to be crowned the AUS-X Open champion in Sydney – it was a crazy race to say the least,” said Webb. “I knew it was going be a tough race to win, you know – Chad’s the fastest guy here and I knew he was going to be extremely hard to beat but I just put my head down and tried to be smart and I held him off, barely.”
In the SX2 class, Penrite Honda’s Jimmy Decotis was able to secure wins on both nights, while Jackson Strong was able to win the FMX Best Trick competition two nights in a row, performing a Frontflip One Hander on Saturday and a Frontflip on Sunday, taking home $40,000 for his efforts.
“This event is a real boost for supercross in Australia and I just want to thank Ricky Carmichael and Cooper for coming out and most importantly the fans who came down to Sydney or watched the broadcast on 7mate, it’s been an awesome weekend back home,” added Reed.
Reed went head-to-head with Carmichael in special one-on-one three-lap events on both nights. Australia’s GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) was able to beat the GOAT in both adrenalin-charged races, putting on an outstanding show for the fans.
