MXSTORE: WRECKERS TO CHECKERS – Ep. 1
As a rider, just imagine working at MXstore. Ohh, the temptation! Aside from being involved with Australia’s largest and fastest-growing online dirt bike gear and accessories store – and based in Queensland’s surf- and dirt-bike-blessed Gold Coast – you’ve got to think the gig would come with a world of moto perks, right? Perks like free (or at least heavily discounted) access to every part or accessory you or your bike could every desire! No doubt, that’s the driving force behind the ‘Wreckers to Checkers’ video series that documents the journeys of three MXstore staffers who each find an old bike (the ‘Wreckers’) and restore it within a strict budget to win themselves the ultimate bragging rights (the ‘Checkers’). Along the way, the boys get the odd leg-up (‘phone a friend’) and spanner in the works (‘block pass’), all of which is performed under the watchful refereeing eye of former AMA Pro rider and long-time KTM test pilot, Mike Sleeter, who recently made Australia home and now looks after MXstore’s MX dept – hence the ‘Checkers’ v ‘Chequers’ (as we spell it here in Oz) tip of the hat to the likeable American. Aside from being both amusing and informative, the video series also reinforces just how cost-effectively you can bring a tired old dirt bike back to life, and will no doubt inspire a lot of people to do just that…
Although the competition is loose, a strict set of rules remain for the boys:
- Only eight working days (over 10 weeks) allowed to buy, build and bling their bikes.
- For every $100 over budget a competitor goes, they are to lose five points.
- Every $100 under budget, the competitor gains five points.
When all is said and done, each competitor will be rated on a 1-10 scale, based on the bike’s:
- Motor
- Suspension
- Riding Experience
- Fit & Finish
- Viewer vote
With a grand total score of 50 available points.
So sit down, crack a beer and enjoy episode 1 of the Wreckers To Checkers series…
