Makeham History + Win A 2014 Fox V4 Helmet
No wonder the likeable Makeham was happy. Just a year ago, he was running around in fifth place in the MXD (Under 19s) class at the MX Nats, using a second-hand bike and riding gear. But in the 12 months since, he’s taken huge steps forward, with the support of Fox Head Australia, Tunetech Racing KTM and his maniacal mentor, Steve “Stavros” Jones from AJ’s Motorcycles in Shepparton. Makeham won the 2012 Australian Supercross Championship late last year, handing KTM’s 250SX two-stroke national MXD class titles in both the SX and MX (Kayne Lamont won the MX Nats). But few expected him to make such an immediate impact in his rookie year in the Pro ranks.
Immediately after the Appin round, we went to the history books to confirm whether or not anyone had ever won a MX2 class moto on a 250cc two-stroke since the machines were made eligible for the class back in 2009. It turns out that Darryll King came close with a second place finish (ironically, ahead of Luke Styke) at Horsham back in 2010. But Kale Makeham was, in fact, the very first rider to put a 250cc two-stroke on top of the MX2 class box at the MX Nats. And that’s a little slice of history nobody can take away from the kid.
As a matter of interest, with Choice Motorsports KTM’s Brock Winston now running third in the MX2 standings, KTM’s 250SX two-stroke now holds down second and third in the title chase. And that’s something very few people would have ever predicted.
