Upgrades Revealed: Gas Gas 2018 2Ts

Spanish motorcycle manufacturer, Gas Gas, has announced a reinvented range of two-stroke models for 2018. The new enduro (EC) and cross-country (XC) models – all of which are claimed to weigh just 105kg (fluids, no fuel) – get revised chassis geometry, narrower and more compact ergos, and a torquier and more powerful powerplant (produced in 250cc and 300cc capacities) with electric start.
The new EC/XC models host a bunch of new or updated componentry, including a Kayaba fork and shock, a hydraulic Magura clutch, an FMF Powercore 2.1 silencer (manufactured exclusively for Gas Gas), a Keihin PWK 38 carburettor, Excel wheels with Metzeler Six Day Extreme tyres, and Nissan brakes (callipers and cylinders) that clamp on NG wave-style discs.

Upgrades

Here’s a snapshot of the key upgrades that are shared across Gasser’s 2018 two-stroke model range…

Frame & Subframe

  • New central backbone steel frame.
  • Reduced torsional stiffness to create better overall handling.
  • 20% lighter than the previous model.
  • Completely redesigned aluminium subframe to allow easier access to the air filter.

Engine

  • All-new cylinder head and crankshaft to minimise vibration.
  • Increased torque and a more linear power delivery.

Fuel Tank

  • Larger 10-litre capacity.
  • The slimmer and more ergonomic tank allows for more comfort and better air evacuation from the radiators.
  • New tank and shroud assembling makes it easier to access the frame.

Bodywork & Ergonomics

  • The new, narrower ergonomics gives the machines more agility.
  • The redesigned, aggressive-looking bodywork is easier to assemble/disassemble and and more wear-resistant.
  • Specific fasteners for the new bodywork.
  • New headlight mask and front number plate.
  • New gripper seat cover.

Suspension

  • KYB 48mm fork – AOS system, closed cartridge with spring and compression rebound control.
  • KYB shock absorber with high- and low-speed compression and rebound control.
  • Tie-rod and rocker arm linkage system that’s matched to the new shock’s more progressive damping character.

Swingarm

  • All-new swingarm design that’s 7% lighter.
  • New external machining.
  • Totally redesigned chain guide and slider system.
  • New chain tensioner system.

Exhaust

  • Redesigned exhaust system that’s optimised for the new engine.
  • An FMF Powercore 2.1 silencer comes standard and an FMF expansion chamber (on the Factory and XC models).

Brakes

  • New wave brake discs (260mm up front, 220mm on the rear).
  • Redesigned rear brake pedal optimised for better modulation and more feel.
  • New Nissin front and rear brake callipers.

  • New rear axle design for faster removal.
  • Black Excel rims with silver galvanised spokes.
  • Rapid filter removal system (through the side cover).
  • Lighter footpegs with more grip and greater surface area.
  • New multi-function dash.
  • Lightweight lithium battery.
