FMX Insider No.35: #WHIPITWEDNESDAY

10 years ago | Words: Ben Heidrich

Transmoto’s weekly web-exclusive column, the FMX Insider, penned by Ben Heidrich.

If you’re familiar with Instagram, you should know the hashtag #whipitwednesday. Every Wednesday in the world of social media, dirt bike riders rejoice and share their weekly whip photos. Old or new, big or small, riders upload their efforts of turning the bike sideways. In this week’s FMX Insider, I have picked a few of my favourite riders to showcase their epic whip style.

First off, we have Aussie FMX rider, Lance Russell, who is well known across social media for his unique whip style. Lance throws his bike out with a loose yet controlled style, leaving you on the edge of your seat. I love how Lance cracks his handlebars back in the other direction after whipping it out, giving his already massive whip a turn down sort of feel. Here is a shot of Lance taken by Katie Lucas whilst he practices at his home compound.

LANCE

Motocross riders seem to always have amazing bike control and whip style from years of practice on the track. Some MX riders take their whips off the track and onto the freestyle ramps, giving them even more hang time to turn the bike upside down. American MX rider, Brett Cue, has some of the most stylish whips I have ever seen. Here’s a couple of snaps taken by Jimmy Bowron of Brett laying it over in front of an epic lakeside background.

Professional FMX rider, Steve Mini, knows how to turn a bike around and has been doing so for years. Steve gets the bike nearly backwards when throwing turndowns off the steel ramp. Steve has been throwing some mega turndowns during the Nitro Circus shows over the last few years. Here is a shot of Steve turning one around at his home compound in NSW, taken by his wife, Kalya Mini.

MINI

X Games Gold medalist Blake ‘Bilko’ Williams is a natural on anything with two wheels. Racing mini pit bikes and riding freestyle motocross, he has heaps of skill and bike control. Here is a snap taken by Katie Lucas of Bilko kicking out a banger whip at a recent Nitro Circus show in Newcastle, Australia.

BILKO

Last but not least, we have Les Parsons from the USA, known for having ridiculously big whips. A few of his videos have recently gone viral over social media showing just how far he can turn a bike upside down. I will leave you with this last photo, taken by Dominic Ricci at Wyvern Ranch, USA. The shot speaks for itself…
