Ducati DesertX: Air Filter Replacement
Ever since the all-new DesertX was first revealed, Ducati’s messaging has consistently stressed just how off-road-capable this model is designed to be. Which is music to the ears of Aussie adventure riders, who tend to use their adventure bikes off the blacktop much more than on it – or at least, much more than adventure riders in most other countries do. But with Australia’s sheer scale and its notorious fine-particle dust, the question of serviceability remains a big one for many prospective Aussie buyers, especially when it comes to the machine’s air and oil filters.
In stock form, the DesertX comes with a paper filter fitted from factory, which may be good enough for typical European conditions. But that fine, red Outback dust we know and love is a whole different beast. So, off the back of Ducati Product Genuis, Nick Selleck’s, move to get UniFilter onboard with a foam air filter specifically made for the DesertX, Ducati dealers are urging Australian buyers who intend to go off-road to install the UniFilter product at purchase.
According to Selleck, air filter replacement is a quick and easy job with minimal tools required – a couple of Allen keys, a Torx and a flat-blade screw driver needed. His first attempt came in at just over 40 minutes as the fuel tank needs to be tilted out of the way. We’re pretty sure with some practice, it’ll be a whole lot quicker. In any case, you can watch Nick Selleck talk through that process at the media launch below.
With the air filter mounted so high up in the front of the bike, wading depth is very good and with cool air directed through the headlight area, we’re expecting very clear lungs, especially when using the foam filter. Also of note is that Ducati is developing an aftermarket air filter, thanks to Selleck’s involvement and time spent with the factory in Bologna. Good to see some Australian influence on the Italian bike!
