DESMO450 MX PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE
Ducati has rolled out a free software update for the Desmo450 MX that introduces predictive maintenance – a system that calculates service intervals based on the actual intensity of engine use, rather than fixed hour-based schedules.
Ducati’s foray into motocross has been anything but conventional – and its latest update to the Desmo450 MX underlines that point. The Borgo Panigale manufacturer has rolled out a free software update that introduces predictive maintenance to the bike, a system that calculates service intervals based on the actual intensity of engine use rather than a static, one-size-fits-all schedule.
Drawing on its experience in Superbike and MotoGP, Ducati Corse has developed a specific algorithm for the Desmo450 MX that calculates an engine stress index in real time, based on operating parameters and usage conditions – including the type of terrain being ridden. The system continuously updates a percentage-based engine wear counter, which in turn updates the maintenance schedule viewable via the Ducati X-Link app on iOS and Android.
In practical terms, that means more frequent servicing for professional or intensive riders, and longer intervals for amateur use. The MID Service interval – which involves replacing the piston and checking valve clearances – can vary between 45 and 60 hours depending on actual engine wear, while a full engine overhaul (FULL Service) can fall anywhere between 90 and 120 hours. For riders whose use is less demanding than the benchmark set by factory rider Alessandro Lupino, that means the potential to postpone servicing and reduce running costs.
The update is available free of charge through any authorised Ducati dealer, where the engine control unit can be updated at no cost to the owner.
