Daniel McCoy and Brenden Harrison sign with KTM for 2013 ASX
KTM Australia has announced that Daniel McCoy and Brenden Harrison have officially signed on to contest this year’s Australian Supercross Championships, set to kick off at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway, September 14.
Speculation that McCoy would sign with the Motorex KTM Racing squad has now been formalised with signatures, and with a significant amount of testing already under his belt on board a 450SX-F, the 2012 ASX runner-up has a solid shot at securing this year’s title. He’ll race alongside Kirk Gibbs, as Todd Waters is set to head to Europe to contest the final round of the 2013 FIM Motocross World Championship, before representing Team Australia at the 2013 Motocross of Nations.
“In my 11 years as a Pro this will be my fifth year on a KTM and the new bike is unreal,” said McCoy. “I’ve done 16 hours on the bike on a supercross track already and I’m feeling more and more confident. We’ve tested well and got our suspension ball-park setting.”
McCoy couldn’t be more pleased to have the support of KTM Australia behind him. “My whole career I’ve had ups and downs like anyone so to get the support from KTM is fantastic, and I was attracted to everything about the team; the guys, the bike, how professional they are and how bad they want to win,” continued McCoy. “After coming second last year and racing in America this year I’m definitely more confident and hungrier than ever to get a championship. I’m itching to race. I’ve still got three weeks to wait and I’m actually counting the days!”
Harrison’s had a terrible couple of years – including two broken femurs (one that then required re-breaking) and a broken neck, but with an unquenched love for the sport and a never-give-up attitude, he remained determined to target the 2013 SX season for a return to competition. Riding a two-stroke KTM 250SX, Harrison has signed to race with the Choice Motorsports KTM team.
“I’ve been brought up never to give up,” said Harrison. “I’ve been back on the bike a couple of months now and since the start of the year I’ve targeted a return this series so I’ve been training full time for 4-5 months and riding supercross for the last month.”
“The backing of Jeff Leisk and KTM has been great,” continued Harrison. “I’ve ridden for KTM Australia for all but two or three years of my career and Jeff has said to me all along that he’d back me when I came back. I’ve been loyal to him and he’s definitely been loyal back. Riding the two-stroke is a strategic move. I’m a big kid and in the past I’ve had to starve myself to race at a competitive weight and I think it made me break more easily. It’s definitely better to feel fit, healthy and strong and I can’t wait to start racing again.”
