Conondale’s 6-Hour: The ‘Other’ Winners
In addition to first, second and third place-getters in the Ironman, Pairs and Team classes at Conondale’s 2017 Transmoto 6-Hour, we also award our notorious Flavor Flav-style plastic clock trophies to the top three finishers in the ‘Mixed Team’ category, plus the winners of the ‘Young Guns’ (all riders under 23), ‘Wise Wizards’ (collective age of at least 150) and, for the first time ever, ‘Wonder Women’ (all female riders). So, let’s meet them, shall we…
MIXED TEAMS
There was a record roll-up of four Mixed Team entries at this year’s Queensland-based 6-Hour, and bringing home the mixed-sex bacon at Green Park was ‘TeamMoto Mixed’, which was spearheaded by the vivacious Whitney Webb (who bettered her third-placed Mixed Team finish last year at Conondale). Along with Whitney’s work/team mates, Keil Robinson and Troy Jacobs, the TeamMoto Mixed trio finished 65th in Teams and 92nd Outright. Rounding out the podium was Havin’ A Crack (Dion Hayne, Matthew Crossley, Miranda Crossley) and the Tangerine Dreamers (Michael Loxley, Kerry Biggers, Richard Yates), several of whom were racing a dirt bike event for the very first time. Something tells us they’ll be back!
WISE WIZARDS
Leading home the five Wise Wizards teams (collective age of at least 150) was the Northern Rivers Moto Maestros of John Baker, Ian Jenner and Gordon McQueen – the Skid Marks – who ran 34th Overall in the Teams class. They beat the Process Plants International team (Adam Hamer, Peter Horne, Trevor Brooks), and the TeamMoto Old Blokes (Darren Shipard, Dale Sanford, Liam Pelly), who ran 86th and 91st Outright, respectively.
YOUNG GUNS
Winning the five-team strong Young Guns (all riders under 23) category was the amusing local trio from ‘It’s a Stitch-Up’ – Tom and Billy Barth and Sam Batham (aka “Bildoe”, “Jabber Jaws” and “Dad Bod”) – who had a whale of a weekend. The boys also finished third Overall in the Teams class and won the Best Outfit Award. They were followed by the likeable young punks from the Motorex Queensland Young Guns team (Harry Teed, Will Scott, Tom Poole), who finished eighth Overall in Teams class. And coming home in third was the One Lap Wonders, (Kyle Miller, Hayden Poptie, Jackson Tronc).
WONDER WOMEN
Last year at the inaugural Transmoto 6-Hour at Conondale, we had our first ever all-women team entry, and we’re stoked that the event continues to attract growing numbers of female riders. Taking the win in the Wonder Women class was the Barnsey’s Orange Angels threesome of Rosie Lalonde, Naomi Carlson and Tamara Grey. Despite expectations, the girls failed to show up in Charlie’s Angels-style tight pants and high heels, but they sure had fun on Sunday en route to their category win, and a very respectable 42nd Overall in Teams and 56th Outright. No wonder their patron cum Team Manager cum Pit Bitch, KTM Brand Manager Ray Barnes, was proud as punch. The All Girls line-up of Julie Denyer, Ainsleigh Ross and Jamie Ein ran second in the Wonder Women category (the same trio who finished second in the Mixed Team class in 2016 at the event). The All Girls team placed 54th in Teams and 70th Outright – again, a very respectable result from a field of 137 teams.
