Chad Reed’s Gnarly WSX Crash!
Last weekend’s opening round of the 2022 World Supercross Championship (WSX) in Wales was far from the fairytale return to racing that Chad Reed had hoped for, with an engine issue causing the 40-year-old Aussie legend to go over the hangers on a step-on, step-on section and bang himself up badly. The pile-driving crash left Reedy with a dislocated shoulder, and breaks to his ribs, scapula and left hand, and that spelled the end of Reed’s night and WSX campaign. As Reedy said, “Not ideal!”
The only ‘good’ thing to come out of Reed’s misfortune was this fascinating 30-minute vlog that documents his entire WSX experience in the UK – from interacting with international race fans to racing to crashing. The camera even takes us behind closed doors at the hospital and back to the Reeds’ hotel room, where Chad, Ellie and their kids dissect the crash frame by frame. It’s raw and candid and brutally honest, and well worth watching.
As we said three months ago, when Reed announced he’d compete for MDK Motorsports in the 2022 World Supercross Championship (WSX), “Chad Reed is to supercross what Wayne Gardner is to MotoGP: the guy primarily responsible for putting Australian SX racers on the world map AND for creating the opportunity for a world championship round of his beloved sport to be staged Down Under. There’s no way Chad Reed was going to miss out on seeing the seeds he sowed bear fruit! And what better way to witness it than from the thick of the action; from down there on the dirty dance floor?!”
As an avowed supporter of the all-new WSX Championship, Reed will no doubt find other ways of getting involved while he’s sidelined through injury. Let’s hope we still see the two-time AMA and World SX Champion at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium in a couple of weeks’ time – if not aboard a bike, then joining the commentary team.
