CDR YAMAHA – REPEATING HISTORY

Given that these guys have had such cruel luck with injuries over the past couple of seasons, how cool was it to see CDR Yamaha’s Jed Beaton and Aaron Tanti cement first and second places in this year’s ProMX title chase?! As we flagged earlier this week in our review of the 2026 ProMX Championship’s final round in Queensland, it’s been 15 years since the Monster Energy CDR Yamaha team last went 1-2 in the Aussie MX Championship’s premier-class standings.

So, can you recall which CDR riders achieved the feat back in 2011; back when the series was called the “MX Nats” and Rockstar was both the series’ and CDR’s energy drink sponsor? Yep, it was Jay Marmont and Josh Coppins, and it happened under very interesting circumstances at the now-decommissioned Coolum Pines MX track!

As outlined in the Transmoto’s ‘Framed’ double-page magazine spread and its extended caption, the unusual series of events that led to Marmont fourth consecutive title left CDR’s Craig Dack in a real predicament. And in the image, Dack’s face says it all, as he juggles messages of congratulations and commiserations.

Incidentally, that same 2011 issue of Transmoto Dirt Bike Magazine ran a ‘Bike Dissected’ feature about the YZ450F that Marmont took to his fourth consecutive MX1-class title.

WHO: Team CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Craig Dack, Jay Marmont & Josh Coppins

WHAT: 2011 Rockstar Energy Dink Motocross Nationals

WHERE: Coolum Pines Motocross Park – Coolum, Queensland

WHEN: July 31, 2011

• Jay Marmont came into the final round with a 14-point deficit to Josh Coppins in the points standings. That made his chances of equalling Craig Dack and Stephen Gall with four consecutive national titles seem pretty remote.

• Marmont had clinched his three previous titles at Coolum Pines, but he knew he was a long shot this year. This track has a habit of breaking bikes and bones but, given Coppins’ form, Jay needed luck to fall his way, too.

• The CDR boys reckon they’d never seen Marmont so relaxed at the Coolum finale. For the first time in four years, the title was his to win, not lose. He happily signed autographs for fans and wore an uncharacteristic smile all day.

• The two CDR Yamaha teammates traded 1-2 results in the first two motos, so the 14-point gap remained with just 30 minutes of racing left. Then Coppins crashed and dislocated his shoulder in Moto 3, extinguishing all title hopes.

• Despite the cruel blow, Coppins was gracious in defeat. In a magnificent show of sportsmanship and with his arm in a sling, he was the first to congratulate Jay. Dack’s face says it all, as he juggles messages of congratulations and commiserations.
