TONY CAIROLI RETURNS TO MXGP

9 months ago | Words: Matt Bernard | Photos: Ducati Media House

Ducati is set to make a ground breaking entry into the MXGP World Championship, with nine-time world champion Tony Cairoli at the helm. This bold move will see Ducati compete in the Netherlands on August 17th and 18th, where Cairoli will ride the Desmo450 MX – a bike that is not only set to race in next year’s MXGP World Championship but will also soon enter production, signalling Ducati’s official foray into the off-road segment.

The Dutch Grand Prix, hosted on the renowned Arnhem track, marks a pivotal moment for Ducati. It’s not just another race; it’s a critical phase in developing the Desmo450 MX, with eyes set on a full championship run in 2025. This debut will be closely watched, as it offers a glimpse into Ducati’s future in the competitive world of motocross.

But the journey doesn’t stop in the Netherlands. Following the Dutch GP, Ducati’s development program for the Desmo450 MX will continue with another key event on August 31st and September 1st at Castiglione del Lago. This round of the Italian Championship will be particularly significant, as Alessandro Lupino, who currently leads the championship standings, will be defending his position. Lupino’s strong performance in the recent Italian MX Championship at Ponte a Egola, where he secured the overall win, has already demonstrated the Desmo450 MX’s competitive edge.

Tony Cairoli’s return to competition at Ponte a Egola, where he claimed victory in the first heat, added further credibility to Ducati’s off-road ambitions. With Cairoli set to race in Arnhem and Lupino leading the charge in the Italian Championship, Ducati is making a statement: they’re not just entering the MXGP – they’re here to compete at the highest level.

This historic debut is more than just a race; it’s the beginning of a new chapter for Ducati and motocross fans worldwide. The upcoming events in Arnhem and Castiglione del Lago will be crucial in shaping the Desmo450 MX’s future, as Ducati gears up for a full-fledged assault on the MXGP World Championship in 2025.
