Resurgent Matt Moss Wins Newcastle ASX

In an eventful night of 2022 Australian Supercross Championship (ASX) action at Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium, it was BBR 102 Motorsports’ Matt Moss and Team Honda HRC Australia’s Max Anstie who came away victorious in the SX1 and SX2 classes, respectively, posting three strong results apiece across the three main-event format. The Triple Crown generated some great racing over the night in front of 20,000 vocal Novocastrian fans, while the technical Newcastle track reached up and bit its fair share of racers throughout the night.

In what was a strong return to form, nine-time Australian Supercross Champion, Matt Moss, took P1 after winning main event’s one and three. Moss’s speed and consistency comes off the back of his recent SX2-class win at the Paris SX, and the BBR 102 Motorsports Yamaha rider was clearly delighted with his Newcastle win, speaking in heartfelt terms on the podium about the long, hard road back to the top of the sport he continues to love.

Meanwhile, Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Dylan Wills posted a strong trio of results to land second Overall and notch a career-first SX1 podium, with Justin Brayton having to settle for third Overall on the night after what appeared to be an issue with his shock absorber (or engine, depending on which unsubstantiated rumour you listen to) in the final main event.

With Brayton and Aaron Tanti entering the night tied on points (and sharing the red plate), Brayton employed a calculated approach to the night show, while a few mistakes from Tanti ended in a big crash during the second main event and a DNS for the third, which significantly hampers his 2022 title hopes.

The SX2 class belonged once again to the Englishman, Max Anstie, who recorded a 1-1-3 scorecard at Newcastle for his third Overall win in a row, followed by Honda teammate Wilson Todd in second position, and Yamaha’s Rhys Budd in third.

The 2022 ASX Championship now heads to the Wagga International Speedway on December 3 for the fourth and final round, where the championship titles will be decided by a Double Header format. Plus, the promoter for the ASX’s Wagga Wagga round, MAP Event Group, has just announced that the Australian FMX Championship will run alongside the series finale of 2022 Fox ASX Championship. Headlining the FMX rider line-up will be none other than multi-time X Games Gold Medallist and global fan favourite, Blake “Bilko” Williams, who has made the return to Australia from California specifically for the event.
