3 Prized Possessions: Toby Price

5 years ago | Words: Toby Price | Photos: Donat O'Kelly

Name a rider – any rider around the world – who’s claimed as much silverware as Toby Price. In his first year with the Motorex KTM Off-Road team, Price won the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), the Australian 4-Day Enduro (A4DE), and both the Finke and Hattah Desert Races on his first attempt. He even managed to win an Extreme Test at his first even crack at the Enduro World Championship (EWC). He’s gone on to win the Dakar Rally (twice), grow the best mullet we’ve ever seen and become an all-round Australian bloody icon.

2010 FINKE BIKE

It was my first with KTM. So being the first rookie to win the Finke Desert Race since 1987 and to win it convincingly – by about 10 minutes – for my new team was a pretty special feeling. It’s something I’ll never be able to repeat. It was a nice little payday, too. I explained to KTM’s Jeff Leisk and [my team manager] Brad Williscroft how important the win was and what it meant to me, so they sorted a deal for me to buy that Finke bike. It now sits proudly in my kitchen/dining room area. She looks great there and no longer cops the pounding it did at Finke.

EWC TROPHY

I’d just come off the 4-Day win and took my first trip to Europe for the Portuguese round of the EWC. I won the Super Test – the Extreme Test they run on the Friday night before the weekend’s round – and scored this vase as a trophy. It was a cool thing to beat all the big names like Knight, Ahola, Salminen and Meo. The vase sits in a glass cabinet as a reminder of that achievement.

‘HEY HEY’ PHOTO

This picture is of me, Daryl Somers and Pluck-a-Duck from the Hey Hey It’s Saturday TV show way back when I was five years old. Apparently, I was the youngest Pluck-a-Duck contestant ever. At first, I won a bed, so I decided to Pluck-a-Duck instead and won $2000 worth of appliances. Then Daryl says, ‘No, that’s no good for a five-year-old’, so I plucked again. I then won $1000 worth of dresses or something. I wasn’t exactly stoked with that, so I had another go and won a trip to the Gold Coast (including MovieWorld and SeaWorld) for the whole family. This picture reminds me of those funny memories.
