2018 AORC: Outright or Outwrong?

Back in March, shortly after the 2018 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) season got underway, we ran an online piece that questioned the disappearance of any reference to the Outright results from the series’ official PR, and we expressed concerns that the change had left AORC riders, teams and fans feeling shortchanged. While we acknowledged that the intention behind Motorcycling Australia’s decision to put a greater relative emphasis on the class results was laudable, we also argued there was no reason why MA couldn’t acknowledge both class and Outright results for each AORC round.
As we explained back in March, “The Outright adds another fascinating element to the AORC because it sheds light on the riders and/or machinery that punch above, or below, their weight when class parameters are removed from the equation” and that “Riders pitting themselves against the clock is the essence of enduro racing, so why let the capacity of their bike get in the way of that?”

Or is there a reason the AORC’s Outright results remain conspicuously MIA this year? Well, according to MA’s Off-Road Events Coordinator, Matt Falvo, “We’ve said all we can say on the issue at this point.”
Falvo also confirmed that only the AORC’s 2018 Outright title winner (not the top 10, as was the custom from 2005 until 2016) would be announced at the end-of-season presentation, and awarded the number-one plate and very handsome ADB Outright trophy.
