The Academy Of Off-Road Riding

Are you new to dirt or adventure bikes? Perhaps you’d like to improve your skills for tackling technical trailrides? Or maybe you want to sharpen up your abilities ahead of the next Transmoto enduro race you take on?

In any case, the Academy Of Off-Road Riding (which Lyndon Heffernan has been successfully operating since 1978) offers two-day courses to suit everyone; serving up off-road tuition for kids and adults, and now, they offer special courses for adventure bike enthusiasts.

Participants learn the core skills required to safely ride a dirt bike, starting with throttle and clutch control, gear selection, standing and sitting positions, braking and cornering. Trail riders will learn how to tackle logs, ruts, hillclimbs, creek crossings and the basics of jumping, while adventure riders will study terrain going up and down hills, loose trail, off-camber and loamy corners, as well as hazard identification and energy saving techniques, such as how to safely turn a big bike around and pick it up.

Additional skills taught, such as how to change a tyre and basic bike set-up and maintenance ensure that you’ll be ready for anything, from a casual day out on the trail to the next Transmoto enduro race you enter.

“I thought I had a pretty good idea on how to ride, until I spent a weekend with Heffo and the Academy Of Off-Road Riding team,” says Transmoto‘s Events Manager, Robbie Warden. “I was able to learn core techniques and build confidence through practicing with the group and developing new skills. I’d like to participate in a few more courses to tune my skills up for the upcoming Transmoto 12-Hour in 2017!”

The Academy Of Off-Road Riding will be running courses at Batemans Bay in NSW on November 5-6 and Merton/Mansfield in Victoria on November 12-13. The trail course costs $250 for adults and $220 for kids, and includes tuition and camping only. The adventure course costs $395 and includes tuition and camping, as well as morning and afternoon tea.

Course participants must own their own bikes, however, one TTR125 is available to hire (suitable for a youth or female beginner, price on application).
