2016 Husqvarna FC450: The Cockpit

The 2016 MX models are pivotal for Husqvarna, and the FC450 is the flagship of this new-gen range. Having been redesigned from the ground up, the 2016 FC450 is a massive 5.2kg lighter than its predecessor, and with its all-new bodywork and subframe, the new bike represents the biggest departure from its KTM counterpart yet. In many ways, this FC450 is the platform that’ll set the tone for the new-look, Austrian-based Husqvarna as it sets about pilfering sales from the Japanese manufacturers in the hotly contested, high-tech motocross market.

So, has Husqvarna got it right for 2016? Does this bike’s performance represent a quantum leap over its predecessor? And what’s the new machine like to work on and maintain? All is revealed in Transmoto‘s 2016 January-February issue (#54), but here’s what jumped out at us about the bike’s cockpit after several rides.

  • With the seamless, one-piece radiator shrouds and sideplates, the new cockpit is super-streamlined, meaning there’s nothing to catch your legs or boots on. And instead of the previous model’s ‘void’ precisely where your calves want to grab the bike, the 2016 bike lets you grip and control it much more effectively. Because the new subframe is now secured to the main frame by a single bolt on each side, not two, there’s no longer that annoying lip to catch your ankles on as you transition from the standing to seated position. The addition of frame guards as standard equipment for 2016 also improves your boots’ grip on the bike.

  • The 2016 bike’s new engine (which is a whopping 23mm narrower between clutch and ignition covers) and smaller 7-litre fuel tank have combined to made the 2016 FC450 noticeably slimmer between your legs, whether seated or standing.

  • The new seat is softer, grippier and a little lower. Which is good, because its predecessor came with a hard and slippery plank that perched you up very high on the machine.

  • Even with the new Pro Taper bars, the seat/bars/peg triangle remains unchanged, but it’s all been brought closer to the ground. This gives shorter riders better control through ruts and in slick conditions, but the lower pegs for 2016 ensure taller guys won’t be cramped for legroom.

  • With the new rubber-damped bar-mounts, and the engine mounts relocated to the side of the new frame, designers have managed to minimise the transfer of engine vibration to the rider’s feet and hands. And that gives the entire machine a more refined feel.
