Chad Reed packed and ready to race Australian Supercross Championships
Doesn’t get much more official than an announcement via Facebook these days, eh? TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed’s crate of goodies is packed and ready to make the trip home, to race the final three rounds of the Australian Supercross Championships. All because the ASX Facebook page got 10,000 likes, though? Nup…
CR22 was coming home to race all along – C’mon, a few clicks on a computer screen can’t make his decisions for him. There’s been another reason behind International Entertainment Group managing director, Yarrive Konsky, pushing so hard to gain so many social media followers.
“It’s simple, my goal is to work on the profile of the sport, attract mainstream attention and make the sport accessible,” stated Konsky via Facebook yesterday. “So why push Facebook? Its the fastest marketing medium. TV commercials are great, expensive and have a specific reach – they run for 30 seconds. Therefore, they don’t allow us to profile the riders, teams and sport. Radio ads have the same problem. Print and online mediums allow us to run editorial and photos that remain forever. The more likes we can get, the more we can communicate to our fans on their favourite riders, the sport and its direction.”
And the reason behind using Chad Reed to gain 10,000 likes? “Why Chad? It’s not hard – he is as much a part of Supercross around the world as the jumps, dirt and starting gates.”
Reed’s Australian campaign will serve him well as the team strives to develop the new Honda race bike in preparation for the Monster Energy AMA Supercross opener in the second week of January.
“I’m really excited to confirm that I’ll be heading home for what will be my first Australian appearance under my own TwoTwo Motorsports banner,” said Reed. “Taking the Championship to Phillip Island is a big task and a significant move forward for the sport, when I first heard the news I was both surprised but encouraged by the direction. We’d originally planned to make a trip home to be spectators at the event and spend time catching up with friends and family but the opportunity to race at such an amazing circuit along with MotoGP was one I couldn’t pass up.
“We saw it as a good chance to race and test the 2013 bike and then felt it would be a significant investment for only a single race so decided to extend it to both Toowoomba and Newcastle. It’s a win-win for me – I get to race at home, launch the awesome new 2013 Honda, test and develop the bike against guys I consider world-class competitors, catch up with my friends and family and get to spend some time with the guys in the MotoGP paddock as well.”
Reed was impressed by all the support shown via social media. “I spend a bit of time on social media too and noticed that the Aussie fans were really rallying behind the Championships’ campaign to bring me back to race – it’s hard to find fans as passionate as these guys and I really do value the support and feedback.”
Everyone’s winning at this stage, especially following the announcement that fans who won’t be able to attend rounds will be able to watch at home on television. “Now as for TV – Yes we are having it. It will show next Friday – 2 x 1 hour programs, similar to the US,” continued Konsky. “Philip Island will be show on the Friday prior to Toowoomba, and Towoomba will be shown the Friday prior Newcastle.”
Reed will make his return to professional racing aboard his all-new 2013 Honda CRF450R this weekend, at the Monster Energy Cup, October 20, before making the trip Down Under to Phillip Island, October 27.
