Tom Mason: In The Name Of Fun

11 years ago | Words: Motorcycling Victoria | Photos: Jessica Stirling

2014 Victorian Off-Road Expert 2 champ, Tom Mason, is looking forward to having some fun at the opening senior round of the 2015 Yamaha Victorian Off-Road Championship (VORC), kicking into gear at Hedley this weekend, April 18-19.

The 17-year-old from Kalorama is also looking to win a Pro class title, and has spent plenty of time on the bike in summer to get ready for a gruelling season. “Preparation has been pretty good,” said Tom. “I’ve been trying to get heaps of time on the bike, and get my skills and fitness up, so I can do the three-hour cross country a bit better.”

Tom is a huge fan of the course at Hedley. “It’s definitely one of my favourite rounds, for sure,” Tom continued. “It’s got everything; a single track, a grasstrack, sandy whoops – it’s got the best of everything.”

The Bolton KTM rider also contested the opening rounds of the 2015 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC), held in Queensland in March, achieving a 2-1 finish in the Transmoto 19 & Under class. He now leads the class by two points over Peter-Daniel Allen.

The Corner Inlet Motorcycle Club will also host the third and fourth rounds of the 2015 AORC this weekend. “It was a good result in Queensland,” said Tom. “It can only get better from here so I’ll keep it going.”

This year, Tom will compete in the Pro class after winning the Expert 2 class of the 2014 VORC by a whopping 80 points, remarkably winning all his races in a flawless season. Tom also won a Junior 2 VORC title in 2013, as well as the ‘Crazy Kids’ class at the 2013 Melbourne Enduro-X and the Junior Lites class at 2013 King of the Enduro-X in Adelaide.

“This year I’m hoping for a top three finish but the main aim is to have fun,” explained Tom. “For the last two years it has all really been about having fun and gaining experience.”

Tom would like to thank Bolton Motorcycles, KTM Australia and Fox Head Australia for all their support.
