2020 ECMX: Round 3 Wrap Up

5 years ago | Words: ECMX | Photos: MX Photo, Jacob Hantis Films

It was an all-round great weekend for Round 3 of the 2020 East Coast MX Series at Maitland last weekend. Like Jekyll and Hyde, the track turned from a smooth loamy highway into a rough rutted monster, which was a struggle for the less experienced riders but a playground for the top competitors.

In the Junior divisions, Lochlainn Reddy put his Cobra 50cc on the top of the podium and extended his championship points lead in the 7-8 50cc class. Even though Hunter Collins was injured earlier in the year and missed Round 1 of the series, he has returned to form with vengeance, dominating the junior 13-15 125cc and 13-15 250 4-stroke classes winning 5 out of 6 motos and the overall win in both classes. Hunter may not be in the hunt for the championship but that is not going to stop him from taking some more race wins.

Luke Clout made his return to racing in Australia after a successful stint racing the USA’s AMA 250 West Supercross with multiple top-ten finishes. Clout was unchallenged in the first three motos of the MX Open class, but in the fourth and final moto, he was surprised by young 16-year-old KTM rookie Blake Fox. Clout had an average start and started to work his way through to the front of the pack. Fox got a better start but still had passes to make – he went passed Rhys Budd and fast local talent Jye Dickson to take the lead and check out. At the halfway mark, Clout had moved into second place but could not close the gap to challenge Fox for the lead.
Fox was clinical and mistake-free just clicking off laps until the chequered flag. The young KTM rookie, Fox, also dominated the 250 and 450 Pro class sweeping all eight motos!

The 30-39 Vets and +40 Vets raced together but were scored separately. Although Nathan Brochtrup is one of the older riders (+40 Vets) he showed the Vets both young and old how it is done, winning his class and beating the younger Vets as well.

It was Jake Tooley who took control of the 450 Clubman class grinding out three out of four race wins and extended his championship lead.
