2018 Kamfari: A Date with Darwin
It’s been four months since the mud dried on the memorable 2017 Kamfari, so we got in touch with Darwin Motorcycle Club’s (DMCC) Alastair McCorkelle for his take on this year’s event, and to give us a glimpse of what entrants can expect for 2018.
^ David Bates (3rd finisher) – Sometimes giving the berries is the only solution.
“The 2017 C&R Constructions Kamfari went off with a blast this year – from the new location, to the larger-than-expected public turnout, to the fact the famous buffalo horns trophy remains in the NT for the first time in more than a decade,” McCorkelle told Transmoto. “The Darwin Motorcycle Club welcomed in excess of 70 riders (including Quad-class entries) to the floodplains and bogholes of Darwin’s Cox Peninsula in the NT for the 46th annual race. And with media coverage extending to mainstream and motorcycling avenues, it shows that off-road racing is alive and well in the Northern Territory.
^ This section brought many unstuck during the race.
“As the venue is slightly more than a day-trip outside of the southern centres, the DMCC is working towards bringing the 2018 Kamfari within the geographic reach of more riders. Our main demographic is comprised of club members and locals from around the Top-End, with other punters making the trip from around the NT and interstate,” McCorkelle went on to explain. “It’s true that there’ve been many Pros race the Kamfari over the years, but they make up the minority in terms of numbers. We want to share the knowledge of what it takes to successfully complete the event, and set up a support system to make it easier for anyone to get their bike and gear (and themselves) to Darwin to race this iconic event. The mud and atmosphere and the challenge; it all makes for an experience. We hope to be able to bring you more details about the 2018 Kamfari before too long. Stay tuned.”
^ Chris Warwick brings it home in 1st place on his NT Powersports Sherco 450.
