2017 ECMX Series: Round 3 Results

8 years ago | Words: Michel Constantinou | Photos: MXphoto

Round 3 of the East Coast MX Series presented by Transmoto in Port Macquarie marked the midway point of the championship. The spectators had the pleasure of watching a host of factory team riders from Crankt Honda Racing Todd Waters and Luke Clout, Penrite CRF Honda Racing Joel and Kurt Wightman, Kyle Webster and Nick Luksich, Husqvarna racing Dylan Wills and Kane Fischer, WBR Yamaha Aaron Tanti all competing for top honours as well as preparing themselves for the Horsham round of the MX Nationals.

In the first moto of the Pro Open Todd Waters led Luke Clout for a majority of the race before Clout made a move at the end to take the win. Waters pulled out of the second moto and Clout went on to the win again. Waters regrouped in the third moto to take the win with Clout coming through in 2nd place. Disaster struck for Clout early in the final moto when he crashed on the landing of a jump and at least three other riders landed and crashed on top of his bike. Due to the damage to his bike Clout had a DNF and Waters went onto the win. Consistency paid off for Corey James who claimed overall victory for the day with finishes of 4, 2, 4, 2 and an injured Joel Wightman runner-up on the podium with third place in every race. There was just as much excitement in the Pro Lites with Dylan Wills, Kyle Webster and Aaron Tanti. The trio gapped the rest of the field and vigorously battled upfront in all 3 motos. Dylan Wills was hot on the starts and led all 4 motos, winning 3 motos by the narrowest of margins and claimed the overall win. Webster figured out the track by the 4th moto and made an impressive charge past all his competitors to win the final race of the day.

You couldn’t ask for two different days in contrast. It rained all day on Sunday and the track turned to slop. The clubman riders and older juniors braved the tough mudder to get through most of the race program. The start was crucial and there was quite a few first turn crashes because of how important it was to get out front. Many riders lost their bikes through mechanical failure or ran out of goggles as the day progressed which brought reminders of the old days of racing no matter what. Thankfully the Hastings Valley Motorcycle Club prepped the track on both days to suit the predicted conditions.
