2014 ASX: The Series So Far

Transmoto’s Jackson Reardon breaks down the 2014 Penrite Oil Australian Supercross Championships so far…

Matt Moss is killing it

Well on his way to becoming one of the greatest Australian MX/SX riders of all time, Moss is tearing through this year’s supercross series. Matt is yet lose a Main Event, and needs only 13 points (18th place) at Brisbane to wrap up the championship ahead of Team Motul Suzuki teammate, Lawson Bopping. He will be aiming for much higher than 18th , however, as he seeks to become the first Australian rider to achieve an undefeated season; albeit in a shortened schedule.

Lawson Bopping’s SX talent is unquestionable

After spending a difficult motocross season as a Privateer, Bopping gained a seat on a factory RM-Z450 with Team Motul Suzuki for supercross. He immediately set about showing the Australian public why he is one of our best SX riders, and has been super consistent with two fourths, a second and a third. Sitting equal second with Adam Monea in the championship standings, Lawson will be out to go one better than his Round 3 finish and get the win in Brisbane come November 8.

USA’s SX2 domination

Since Brendan Harrison won Round 1 at Bathurst, it has been the USA show, as Gavin Faith has strung together three consecutive wins. He and Kyle Peters, another product of North America, sit first and second in the points heading into the final round. Aussies such as Harrison, Taylor Potter and Kale Makeham will be out to win the final round and stamp an Aussie footprint on the series.

Don’t forget Adam Monea

NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Adam Monea has not competed in a full SX series since 2011, but it hasn’t shown at all! He has put in some impressive results and, as mentioned, sits in equal second with Bopping. Always known for blazing speed, Monea has been able to stay on the bike (for the majority of the time) and put in consistent results. He rode through the pain of ankle injuries at the third and fourth rounds to put in a solid fourth and fifth for the weekend, and will be hoping to end the series on a high.

Where’s the real Jake Moss?

Known for blazing speed – the kind of talent that carried him to a podium in the US Nationals in 2009 – Jake has been just a tick off the frontrunners in this year’s series. First turn crashes held him back at the third and fourth rounds of the series; in a big crash in the first corner at Round 4, Jake aggravated a shoulder injury which prevented him from finishing the race. Although there has not yet been a statement on the seriousness of his shoulder injury, if Jake does race Round 5, you can be sure he will be looking to make a statement to end the series.

Dobson’s efforts

Is Jesse the most underrated rider in Australia at the moment? After finishing just outside the top-ten in the motocross series, Dobson is sitting sixth in the SX1 standings in a remarkable effort. He has got there through consistency, finishing no worse than tenth, and will be hoping to push Jay Marmont out of the top-five at the final round.

SX2 battles

Although Gavin Faith has checked out to a strong championship lead in the 250 class, behind him, Privateers, factory riders and semi-factory riders are battling for every position available. With names like Luke Arbon and Ryan Marmont sitting towards the rear of the top ten, you know it’s tough to get to the front. Privateers such as John Prutti and Geran Stapleton have been mixing it up with the big boys and putting in strong results. Although some factory teams are staying away from 250s at the moment, you can’t argue that there is no talent in this class!
