Young Aussie in America: Mason Hills

Mason Hills: the young MXer from New South Wales who’s been dicing with Haiden “Dangerboy” Deegan in California.

Hills is a nine-year-old motocross racer from Nowra, NSW, who competes locally on board a KTM 65SX. His talented coach, Cody Mackie, recently encouraged Mason’s parents to send him overseas to compete against some of the quickest kids in America.

Mason’s mum and dad, Corinne and Greg, held a small fundraiser for their son and began to organise the journey. Mason and Greg spent three weeks in California in March, focused on contesting the annual California Classic. Impressively, Mason scored a holeshot in one of his races and finished in second Overall twice to internet phenom, Brian Deegan’s son, Haiden “Dangerboy” Deegan.

He also contested an area qualifier for the Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Motocross Championship. Mason needed to finish inside the top ten to qualify, and he managed to secure second and third place finishes, meaning he will now head back to California in six weeks to contest a regional qualifier. If he qualifies in that, he’ll be heading to Loretta’s Ranch to compete in the biggest amateur motocross event in the world.

During his time in the USA, Mason was also invited out to Deegan’s property to ride with the family, and he got to meet and hang out with three-time Loretta Lynn’s champion, 11-year-old Ryder Difrensco. He also got to hang out with Robbie Maddison for a few days, and met the famous Troy Lee.

Talk about a nine-year-old living the dream, eh?!
