WSX Abu Dhabi: Preview
The 2024 World Supercross Championship (WSX) meets in Abu Dhabi for the final round of the 2024 season.
Heading into the conclusion at Etihad Arena, Yamaha’s Eli Tomac leads the championship having won 10 out of the 12 races since the opening round in Vancouver, Canada. With a 46-point lead over Suzuki’s Ken Roczen, and only a 5-point gap between Roczen and Honda’s Joey Savagty – the very recently crowned Australian Supercross Champion (ASX) – this Wednesday’s night showdown is primed to be an intense night of racing.
Out with a dislocated shoulder from the last WSX round in Perth, Honda’s Dean Wilson will be replaced by Aaron Tanti. Keeping on the topic of injuries, Wilson is joined by Colt Nichols who will be subbed by Thomas Ramette aboard the PMG Suzuki as Roczen’s teammate.
Australian’s own WSX riders, Kawasaki’s Luke Clout and Yamaha’s Matt Moss, head into tonight’s event sixth and 10th in the SX1 standings with room to improve before the final chequered flag.
Honda’s Shane McElrath leads the SX2 class with a 57-point margin on Kawasaki’s Coty Schock. McElrath moves into this final round on a high following an impressive AUSX campaign and being crowned the SX2 champion down under.
McElrath is in a similar position to Tomac where both riders can cruise to the title, but must ensure they stay out of trouble to write that storyline.
Yamaha’s Enzo Lopes remains to be a contender, sitting only two-points behind fellow Rick Ware Racing rider Schock. Phil Nicoletti will join the lineup in the SX2 class, filling in for CDR Yamaha’s Kaleb Barham.
