Tim Gajser to America?
The rookie who’s currently dominating the 2016 MXGP series, Slovenian Tim Gajser, is the hottest prospect in the European motocross paddock, and Honda have him locked away until season 2020. With nine moto wins under his belt, the reigning MX2 World Champion sits 24 points ahead of Yamaha’s Romain Febvre in the Overall standings, and has high hopes to secure the 2016 MXGP title with eight rounds remaining.
Transmoto sources tell us that if the 19-year-old can lock up the 2016 MXGP title, Honda will be sending him directly to the USA to contest the 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series and Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, and bypass his opportunity to claim back-to-back MXGP titles next year.
At the moment, for season 2017, Honda (across Team Honda HRC and GEICO Honda) is rumoured to be fielding Ken Roczen (another former MX2 World Champion from Europe), Cole Seely, Malcolm Stewart and Justin Bogle in the 450 Class (as Trey Canard is apparently heading to Red Bull KTM to race alongside Ryan Dungey).
Of course, he still needs to win this year’s MXGP title for any of this to eventuate, and guys like Febvre, Antonio Cairoli and Max Nagl won’t let him have it easily.
Frenchman Dylan Ferrandis (Kawasaki) will definitely be making the move from the FIM Motocross World Championship to America in 2017, and has been linked to the successful Yamalube/Star Racing/Yamaha team that Cooper Webb and Jeremy Martin currently race with.
