MXGP: Antonio Cairoli locks up seventh FIM Motocross World Championship
For the second consecutive year, the British track of Matterley Basin hosted the MXGP Festival over the weekend. Rain poured down early in the day, although the sun started to shine as the MX1 and MX2 riders went out to contest their Main Event races. Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli dominated the opening moto and was crowned this year’s MX1 FIM Motocross World Champion, but it was Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle who took the Overall victory, as Cairoli couldn’t finish the second moto with mechanical issues. At 27 years old, Cairoli was awarded his seventh FIM Motocross World Title – his fifth in MX1 and his fourth with KTM. The Italian has 63 Grand Prix victories to his name, and is now just 38 wins away from Stefan Everts’ record.
“It is very special to win another title with KTM because they have always been behind me,” said Cairoli. “Every title is different. Of course, the first title is the one I remember the most, but all of them are special. Since my mum passed away, all the titles are for her and that keeps me motivated to keep on winning.”
In the MX2 class, Glenn Coldenhoff obtained the Overall victory at Matterley Basin, ahead of Jake Nicholls and José Butrón. Australia’s Dean Ferris won the opening moto, but was forced to retire from the second with mechanical problems.
