Hunter Lawrence claims victory at AUSX Open

The fifth and final round of the Fox Australian Supercross Championship saw a successful night for Hunter Lawrence with the Honda HRC rider taking out two of the night’s three races to claim the round win.

It was a long-anticipated return for both the Lawrence brothers, having been exactly five years since Jett made his professional Supercross debut at the AUSX Open back in 2019 in the SX2 class. The night ended early for the 21-year-old after a race two incident caused excessive bike damage, marking the Honda rider as an absentee for the final race. Star Racing Yamaha rider Cooper Webb suffered a similar fate; the race one winner injured only moments after Jett at the same turn and getting his night cut short.

The one-night event at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium crowned the 2024 SX1, SX2 and SX3 championships with Honda HRC rider Joey Savatgy clinching the SX1 title. After battling a flat rear in the final race, the American had done enough to claim his first premier-class Fox Australian Supercross Championship despite reigning-champion and fellow Honda rider Dean Wilson’s best efforts. Battling with an injured shoulder from last weekend’s WSX in Perth, Wilson nailed a second-place finish in the final race after an intense battle with Hunter Lawrence and closed out the night in third place overall, behind CDR Yamaha Monster Energy rider Jet Beaton in second.

Honda continued their dominance in SX2 with Shane Mcelrath dominating the night and ultimately taking the championship win, followed by Honda Racing teammates Col Thompson and Brodie Connolly.

The SX3 championship halted a Honda clean-sweep, as Yamaha Racing Team rider Seth Burchell took the win over Honda Racing’s Jake Cannon. Yamaha riders sandwiched Cannon, with Koby Hantis taking the third spot.

Kelly Bailey, AME Director and AUSX Open Event Director, reflected on the season’s success and the collective effort that made it possible:

“This season has shown what can be achieved through the combined efforts of teams, sponsors, and riders, whose commitment has delivered exceptional racing at every round.

“To the fans—thank you. Your passion and support have created an incredible atmosphere and driven us to set the bar higher. You are the ultimate arbiters of this championship, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

“Our staff have been the backbone of this season’s success, working tirelessly to manage everything from track builds to event coordination and fan engagement.

“Building on the momentum of 2024, we’re excited to deliver an even bigger and better season in 2025.”
