EDRIVE BALANCE BIKES: START ’EM YOUNG & KEEP IT FUN!

4 years ago | Words: Andy Wigan | Photos: KTM Images

With June 30 staring us in the face, you know what that means, right? For most adults, it means tax time and all the financial rigmarole that goes with it. For kids, on the other hand, its means half the year is done, which of course means Christmas is just around the corner! And if your tin lids are anything like ours, that also means you’re about the become the subject of some intense pestering for a two-wheeled Chrissy present.

Cue the electric-powered balance bikes from KTM, Husqvarna and GASGAS, who’ve all recently announced styling upgrades (“a race injection”) to their 12- and 16-inch eDrive models. Yes, they’re all based on the same Stacyc machine, but the brand and colour options mean your little tyke can take his or her pick to ensure they emulate mum, dad and/or their favourite Pro rider.

The practicality and versatility of these electric-powered balance bike provides the perfect entry-level platform for kids, allowing them to revel in the simplicity of power-assisted pace and start to develop their raw instincts for motorcycling – to grasp the basic feeling of bars, wheels, torque and balance.

UNDERSTANDING THE MODEL OPTIONS

  • The 12eDRIVE is the ideal starter for rapidly growing children. Featuring 12-inch wheels with pneumatic tyres and a low 33cm seat height, it allows riders to learn to push or coast with confidence before graduating to the three-level powered mode. It weighs less than 8kg, boasts an aluminium frame and BMX style forks.
  • The 16eDRIVE is the clear choice for slightly taller riders or those with more ‘miles’ or a slightly larger 45-61cm inseam measurement. The bike has a high-output motor that is slightly more powerful than its smaller brother. It is fitted with larger 16-inch wheels and provides an increased 43cm seat height.

THE EDRIVES – MODEL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sturdy, lightweight aluminium frame – easy for children to pick up and handle.
  • Three progressive power modes – first experience of powered speed.
  • Safe, thermally protected 20V battery – 30-60 mins run time and 45-60 mins charging time.
  • 33cm and 43cm seat heights.
