YAMAHA REVEALS DETAILS OF NEW e-MTB

3 years ago | Words: Andy Wigan | Photos: YMA

Many of you will probably already know that Yamaha’s electric motors have been used in other brands’ pedal-assist e-MTBs for several years now. And why wouldn’t they? After all, Yamaha has been developing their Power Assist System for 30 years. But in recent years, it’s become clear that simply being a motor supplier for bicycle brands isn’t part of Yamaha’s grand plan. No, the Japanese giant’s endgame is to expand its two-wheeled product range with a selection of new e-Bike offerings. And the recent unveiling of details for their “YDX-Moro 07” – a full suspension enduro e-MTB that uses a Yamaha developed-and-built electric motor and frame – confirms it. Yep, from May this year, Yamaha motorcycle dealerships will start selling this $9000 e-MTB alongside their other, more conventionally powered, motorcycles.

Next week in Western Sydney, Transmoto will be attending the Aussie media launch for the YDX-Moro 07, so stay tuned for our feedback on that experience. In the meantime, here are the details that Yamaha has released about their all-new e-MTB…

IN A NUTSHELL

Yamaha pioneered and developed the Power Assist System in 1993, thereby creating the world’s first electrically power-assisted bicycle. Fast forward 30 years and Yamaha is still the only e-Bike manufacturer that offers its own motor and frame package. Having close control over both elements of the Moro range gives Yamaha a unique advantage.

Our engineers used their vast experience with the YZ range of MX bikes when they developed the twin-spar aluminium chassis. The result is a combination of high value and performance that will appeal to riders who want to get their adrenalin fix with minimal noise on trails close to home.

The YDX-Moro 07 is an aluminium full suspension enduro e-MTB that sports 27.5-inch wheels and comes in small, medium and large frame sizes. It features RockShox suspension, a slick-shifting Shimano XT 12-speed drivetrain, cable-operated dropper seat post, and four-piston calliper Magura brakes for one-finger stopping.

PW-X3 MOTOR

Yamaha’s latest PW-X3 is the company’s lightest, smallest and most powerful drive unit. Its compact dimensions give a narrow Q factor together with excellent ground clearance for superior off-road performance. Zero Cadence technology provides instant assistance – and Auto Support Mode provides extra power on hills and into headwinds.

INTERFACE X DISPLAY

Interface X is Yamaha’s minimalist and simple LED communication unit that is the perfect match for the YDX-Moro 07. Mounted centrally to the bike’s handlebar, it gives a clean and tidy cockpit area – and features clearly marked battery and assist indicators. Featuring Bluetooth Low Energy Technology for easy smartphone connectivity and ANT+TM technology for cycle computer compatibility.

DUAL TWIN FRAME

YDX-Moro 07 has been developed using advanced chassis technology inspired by Yamaha’s race-winning motorcycles. Featuring twin top tubes and twin down tubes, the unique Dual Twin frame gives an idealised balance of flex and rigidity for confident handling together with accurate surface feedback.

INTEGRATED BATTERY

The 500Wh compact battery is fully integrated into the Dual Twin chassis to achieve optimum mass centralisation for agile handling, and providing 85Nm of power that is delivered in a wide variety of modes – including ECO, Standard, High, the unique and natural feeling MTB mode, Extra-Power, Automatic and Walk Assist. The battery can be recharged to 80% in an hour and 100% in four hours.

ROCKSHOX LYRIK SELECT CHARGER FORK

YDX-Moro 07’s premium specification features a RockShox Lyrik Select Charger fork, giving 160mm of front wheel travel. Developed to handle everything from challenging singletrack through to fast downhills, this front-end gives this new Yamaha e-MTB serious off-road capability for fun without limits.

ROCKSHOX SUPER DELUXE SELECT+ REAR SHOCK

The RockShox Super Deluxe Select+ rear shock provides 150mm of plush rear wheel movement for a smooth ride with excellent rear wheel traction. Mounted between the twin top tube, this premium shock contributes towards the YDX-Moro 07’s fun character and all terrain ability.

MAGURA MT5 BRAKES

Equipped with a radially mounted master cylinder that provides accurate feel, the Magura MT5 brakes features a powerful one-piece, four-piston calliper that gives strong one-finger braking performance.

Available in Icon Blue colour, the YDX-Moro 07 is keenly priced at $8999 (including GST and ready to ride), and will be available at selected Yamaha dealerships from May, 2023.
