PROMX @ MAITLAND: THE BANGERS

4 years ago | Words: Miller Mendham | Photos: Aus ProMX

For Aussie motocross fans, there was more sobering news today as Motorcycling Australia (MA) announced that yet another round of the Penrite ProMX Australian Motocross Championship (SA’s Gillman round, which was slated for early September) had fallen victim to Covid restrictions and been postponed.

In fact, MA’s ProMX Management team has now been forced to put a “postponed” status next to seven of the 2021 series’ 10 rounds. But let’s focus on the positives for a moment: the fact that the 2021 ProMX at least managed to get three rounds in the bag – Wonthaggi, Canberra and Maitland.

And seeing as that Maitland round – which ran just as Greater Sydney descended into lockdown in late June – featured prime conditions and great racing, we figured we’d reflect on what could very well be the rebooted national series’ last appearance of the year by showcasing our favourite 25 images from the weekend. And while we’re at it, we also take stock of the progressive standings in the premier Thor MX1 class, along with supporting MX2 and MXD classes.

With a dominant victory by Luke Clout over the weekend, Kirk Gibbs chased him down resulting in second for the day, and finally Todd Waters rounding out the podium for the weekend.

The current Thor MX1 championship standings are as follows:

  1. 122 Points – Luke Clout
  2. 119 Points – Regan Duffy
  3. 116 Points – Todd Waters
  4. 114 Points – Kirk Gibbs
  5. 103 Points – Hayden Mellross

Victory in the MX2 class at the Maitland round was taken by Kyle Webster with 1-4 moto finishes. He was closely followed by the two Yamahas of Jesse Dobson and Jay Wilson. Meanwhile, Nathan Crawford was the first man to break Websters’ win streak.

Currently, the 2021 MX2 championship standings are:

  1. 143 Points – Kyle Webster
  2. 109 Points – Jesse Dobson
  3. 106 Points – Rhys Budd
  4. 104 Points – Jay Wilson
  5. 85 Points – Nathan Crawford

Blake Fox continues to grow his lead in the standings with a perfect 1-1 moto scorecard in the stepping-stone MX3 class at Maitland, while Ryder Kingsford remains in second and Cooper Holroyd captured his first national podium of the 2021 series.

Here’s how the 2021 MX3 championship standings look:

  1. 147 Points – Blake Fox
  2. 127 Points – Ryder Kingsford
  3. 91 Points – Kayden Minear
  4. 89 Points – Ben Novak
  5. 87 Points – Kobe Drew

Who’s your pick for the remaining rounds of the 2021 ProMX series? Or do we start to look at our series leaders in each class as champions elect?
